Hello,

Running Windows 2000 SP4, with latest patches, security fixes, scanned
for viruses/trojans/adware/spyware/etc, defragmented & checked the
drives, SFC'd and so on. Thus, a pretty stable system altogether.

Im having a problem creating File Shares, and as I slowly tried to
troubleshoot the problem, I came across the fact that my NetBios might
be disabled.

1. Through the Network Connections, I've already used the GUI setup to
Enable the NetBios Over TCP/IP properly (in the WINS) tab.

2. But what is interesting that 'ipconfig /all' still shows that
NetBIOS is disabled for the adapter that I use.

3. Running 'nbtstat -c' shows a 'Failed to access NBT driver >
:Unknown error number'

4. Through Microsoft's Support site I figured out that I have to
reinstall the NBT driver.

Question: How do I reinstall the NBT Driver or the NetBios and have it
enabled on my Windows 2000 SP4 Desktop so that I can share files ?

Clarification of Question by aquamango-ga on 08 Jul 2004 21:45 PDT
Just an addition:

I do NOT need help on :

- How to setup shares on Windows 2000
- How to enable file sharing on Windows 2000
- How to enable NetBios over TCP/IP using the Network Connections >
Properties > Advanced > WINS .. etc (it doesnt work for me)
- What NetBios is

I DO need help mostly on :

- How to Reinstall NetBios / NBT Driver
- How to Make the NetBios work for my Connection

So I hope that would save you some time. Thank you.

If the MS support page you're referring to is this one:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/w2kmsgs/4155.asp

...you should note that the error message discussed there
refers to a specific driver by name:
Failed to access NBT driver name

The error you're getting is qualified by ':Unknown error number'

Reinstalling the driver, therefore, may or may not work.

To reinstall the NBT driver, simply uninstall and reinstall
TCP/IP. The directions are given on this page at Microsoft:

" To remove TCP/IP from your Windows 2000-based computer:

1. Click TCP/IP, and then click Uninstallfrom all dial-up
connections and from all LAN connections in the Network
   and Dial-up Connections tool.
2. Install another protocol (NWlink or NetBEUI) to maintain
   a placeholder for each connection.
3. Restart your computer.
4. Click LAN connections, reinstall TCP/IP, and then restart
   your computer."
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;285034

Notice that they don't tell you to uninstall the placeholder
protocol (I'd use NetBEUI) after reinstalling TCP/IP. I would
recommend doing so.

After reinstalling TCP/IP, check to make sure that NetBios Over
TCP/IP is still enabled on the WINS tab, as you did before.

If you have any questions about the directions above, please
feel free to ask.

You might also want to make sure that any firewall you're
running is not blocking port 139, which could produce the
same problem.

Obviously, long-distance troubleshooting of a computer problem
can be touch-and-go, so if this doesn't solve the problem,
I will count on your feedback to continue the process of
resolving it.

Hello sublime1-ga,

Well.. here it goes:

I've followed the procedures you listed, and the result is that my
desktop is currently in a state of .. COMPLETE DISASTER:

1. Once I did the first restart after uninstalling TCP/IP and
replacing it with NetBEUI, right after the log on:

- The system didnt load explorer.exe right away, it took about 3
minutes for the desktop & the rest to show up
- svchost.exe kept on crashing and restarting showing the regular crash window
- DrWatson wasnt even able to provide logs about the crashes
- Manually re-executing svchost.exe created the same problem
- Add/Remove panel now doesnt have the regular content, instead of
which, just shows some 8pt font lines of text on top (definately some
error because it is not loading)
- The connection from Network Places is missing
- The system hangs whenever I try to do anything.

This happened in the morning when I got the chance to read your
answer. After having a good rest, I'm back at the desktop, using the
second computer to communicate to you, running the SFC on the "ill"
computer, hoping that it will fix atleast half of the problems
*crosses fingers*

Thank you for your suggestion, this is probably not your fault, but
please keep the question open, once I do fix the problem I am having
now, I will return to your question for a clarification if NetBios did
not work.

Eek!

No, what you're describing definitely shouldn't be happening as
a result of uninstalling TCP/IP! The directions are straight from
a MS support page, and I've personally uninstalled and reinstalled
TCP/IP on my W2K SP4 system twice, with no such repercussions.

Though you've indicated you have scanned for trojans, viruses
and spyware, what you're describing makes me suspect such things.
Some antivirus programs are better than others, and if you're
using Norton, e.g., it's been known to cause as many problems
as it fixes. A quick search of the Microsoft Knowledge Base
Articles returns 38 issues associated with Norton:
http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?Queryc=norton+antivirus&Query=norton+antivirus&srch=sup&catalog=LCID%3D1033%26CDID%3DEN-US-KB%26PRODLISTSRC%3DON&Product=msall&KeywordType=PHRASE&Titles=true&numDays=&MaxResults=150&srchstep=1&InCC_hdn=true&querySource=gASr_Query

I'll be away for much of the day, but will check back in as
soon as I can. You can post Requests for Clarification
indefinitely, so don't worry about the question closing.

I also use SpyBot S&D & Adware aswell.

Im still working on the problem.

Ok, problem fixed after the few hours.

Solution was provided by reading another answer for another question a
researcher gave me, by requesting me to provide the "Hijackthis" logs.
On the same page : www.merijn.com there is an LSPFix file that pretty
much fixed everything up.

Im doing the NetBIOS reinstall right now.

Thank you

Ah, yes, I've had to use LSPfix once upon a time. I'm glad to
hear that things are proceeding well. Just checking in to let
you know I'm back home. Let me know how the reinstall goes.

Great!

I dont know much about what LSP fix did (it fixed quite a few [20+]
entries), but its just unimaginable how much it affected (Add/REmove,
crashes, freezups, slowdowns, etc) -- I'm still very happy that it
brought everything back.

The Reinstall worked perfectly, to be quite honest, I felt like an
idiot when you've provided me with an answer, regarding to
Uninstalling/Reinstalling the TCP/IP protocol to install/reinstall
NetBios. The answer is so obvious, the only excuse I would have is
that I've never ever liked (security reasons) nor used (never had a
network) NetBios before.

Thus, thank you for clearing such beginner basics to me, all is well
and Im very glad to be able to access the other computer through the
Network.

Another question, that you do or do not have to answer (my rating on
you is already a 5+ with a tip), I thought that sharing files through
NetBIos would increase the file transfer speed between the two
computers, but its pretty much the same as before (I was using an FTPD
+ FTP to make file transfers). Im using two ethernet cards with 10/100
capability through a non-wireless router.

I'm ready to give you a rating, just wanted to know if you have an
answer to the above. If you do not, its ok, just let me know -- it
will not affect anything here.

Thank you

I'm very glad to hear it all worked out, and you're up and running.

With regard to your last query, I had seen the other question you
posted on GA and decided I didn't know enough to answer it. As of
now, I have no experience whatsoever in networking two computers.

What I have done is to set up a server on my computer, and then
download a 4-5MB file I placed on the webpage created by the
server. The speed was astonishing - around 10MB/sec, if I
remember correctly (which may not be the case, but I'm pretty
sure). So when you mention speeds of "1500kb/s to 4000kb/s",
I can understand your disappointment.

I honestly don't know what might be causing your bottleneck,
but if you want to play with the webserver, it's free, and
pretty intuitive to use. It's called SimpleServer:WWW by
the folks at AnalogX. They have a fancier version now called
SimpleServer:Shout, too. There's also a whole bunch of network
software, on the same page, that you might find useful:
http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network.htm

Good luck!

Wonderful job!

The problem I've been pondering for weeks have been solved. I can now
share files with ease, without having to use any 3rd party software.

Thank you!
