Hi,
I am looking for pictures of the interior of Charlemagne's Chapel in
Aachen Germany to license for a documentary. I have found the exact
pictures I need on various websites, but I am unable to locate the
masters of the sites to obtain information about the SOURCE of the
photo, whether it is from a research book, reference book or travel
photo. I need to find a book or website that will give me this
information. I also have the photo for reference if you need me to
email it.

Scott,

I have found this particular picture on a few different websites, but
its provenance is unclear (many websites simply find images elsewhere
on the Internet, then post them on their own websites without
permission).

I can point you to a nearly-identical photo for which provenance is
known and licensing available. Will you consider that an acceptable
Answer?

Ace,

I have not been able to find the images that I originally got to with
your original email; I am a bit under duress to get this project
onlined, so I may need to take up Cryptic on his/her offer.

Scott,

I can provide you with at least two websites that have the same photo
as the one you posted; however, I cannot guarantee that either owns
the rights to the picture (I strongly suspect that neither does,
although they might be able to point you to the owner). I can also
provide you with two different sites which have two nearly-identical
photos, which are both licensible. Will those things constitute an
acceptable Answer for you?

aceresearcher

Hey Cryptic,

I am faxing the cathedral this am, but if you have a better, quicker
source, PLEASE let me know. I have tried both Corbis and Getty, as
well as photosearch. I was really hoping Corbis would have it, as we
have a great company rate with them. I'm working on the Lord of the
Rings DVDs in Los Angeles... are you out here as well?

Okay Cryptic,

Now I'm inspired to go and find the picture of a native Kiritaki
warrior in traditional wicker armor! I had given up :)

Scott,

The interior shot you posted of the Aachen Cathedral -- or
Charlemagne's Cathedral -- is of the Palatine Chapel.

Here are 2 websites I found using the photo identical to the one you posted.

http://www.professorcornbread.com/projects/project/palatine01.jpg
from page

I do not believe that either of them own the rights, but you may be
able to get the true owner's information from the Professor Cornbread
site.

The nearly identical, licensible photo I found was indeed on Corbis,
using the words "Palatine Chapel". The ID number of the photo is

http://pro.corbis.com
photo ID# CS005110

A similar (but not nearly as good, in my opinion) photo is probably
licensible from ArtSlides.com:

Some other nearly-identical photos I found:

"Foto Marburg" has quite a few pictures from Aachen.

"The mission of Foto Marburg" (including links leading to additional information):
http://www.fotomarburg.de/fmwebsite/fotomrA_e.htm

Go to
http://www.bildindex.de/

then click on "Orte",
and keep on clicking until you arrive at "Orte / A / Aachen / Münster".

However, most of these pictures are in black and white.

Redneck --

I know the answer -- but I'm a "commenter," not a GA researcher. I'm
confident the mighty Aceresearcher will succeed -- so am gonna hold
off posting until or unless all else fails.

Hi Ace,
I originally found the images I needed and I seem to remember some
licensing information, but now keep running into dead ends with this
particular site. I will give it a few more tries.

Perhaps the "Domkapitel Aachen" could provide you with a picture.

Here is their address (including e-mail):
http://www.aachendom.de/web/index.php?site=ad_kont000.html

Pit Siebigs ("freiberuflich, auch für den Aachener Dom tätige
Fotograph") is a freelance photographer, also working for the Aachener
Dom:

Oops, I don't mean to overstate that I "know" the answer. (Yes! It's
true! * I * took that photograph!!)

No, no. . .What I meant is, I can tell you where you can get a
broadcast quality image of that picture (as far as I can tell from the
tiny photo you posted), as well as others -- and license it to you.
Well, at least the lawyers where *I* work would consider these
acceptable, legal sources. (I produce documentaries for TV, so have
to get all the images I use licensed and cleared before I can use
them. )

Sounds like Ace is ready to provide the same --or similar -- and FP's
leads are also good.

sorry, typo there. I didn't mean I could license it to you.

Redneck --

Corbis DOES have it! That's where I saw it.

#CS 005110 Called "Palatine Chapel in Aachen."
At least that photo sure looks like the one you posted.

And the copyright says "Archivo Iconografico SA/Corbis"

I also found it on Bridgeman Art. And variations of it on Kobal.
And others as well. But the one that looks like the exact shot
you posted is Corbis.

No, I'm in New York. . .we should trade our lists of sources some time.

P.S. Ace, if you were going to post the Corbis or another way to get
it, then I'm sure Redneck will want you to claim the answer. . .I
only posted this now 'cause I saw his plea saying he was on such a
tight deadline.

Red --

Actually, I didn't use "Aachen" in the search.
I typed "Charlemagne" and "Chapel." And it popped right up.
You just never know.
I've found all those stock library search engines have to be
coaxed and massaged and finessed -- sometimes it takes many
tries. Sometimes I've even found what I needed by MISSPELLING
a word.
