Question ID: 383741
I am looking for the names of Universities in Canada and the USA
where it is possible to obtain an Education Degree in one year of
study. I have a BA and a BComm (business degree) both obtained many
years ago.

This is NOT to be distance learning.

I want to prepare myself to teach English as a foreign language. I
realize that an option is to earn a TESOL or TEFL certificate, but I
also want to explore an option to seek a university degree that will
help prepare to teach English as a foreign language.

I am looking for names of accredited, reputable universities that
offer Education Degree programs that can be obtained in one year,
assuming an individual currently possess an undergraduate degree. It
would be helpful if the response included information about whether
the university offers education degrees geared towards teaching
English as a foreign language.

Are you looking for B.Ed? M.A/M.Ed?

From my preliminary search, I seriously doubt it if there are degree
programmes that one could finish in one year. Would you settle for a
dimplom, or for a longer programme?

I would have thought that it might be possible to obtain a B.Ed. in 1
year with a 4 year undergraduate degree already obtained, but from
your initial research it appears that perhaps this is not possible.

Could you look for options for B.Ed as well MA./ M.Ed. even if longer
than one year duration ?(although ideally I would like this to be a 1
year committment)

Could you expand the search to include not only Canada and the USA,
but also the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia?

Could you also look for diploma options.

Please recall that I would like the emphasis of the degree/diploma to
be teaching English as a foreign language.

Thank you

Sandy - Good news, found lots of them (degree programmes). Organising
the information, it should take a day or two.

Dear Sandy Beach,

I found several findings that last not more than a year - all but one
outside the US and Canada.

USA
===
Of the residential programmes offered in US, in the TESOL site
(<http://www2.tesol.org/careers/programs/degree-undergrad.html>), only
one claims that it is possible to finish it within a year. However,
even this programme(NYU), states that graduation within one year is
not enough in order to receive teacher's certification in the State of
New York:

NYU http://www.nyu.edu/education/teachlearn/mmsweb/programs/tesol.htm
(1 year without certification).; They also offer a 14 months programme
<http://www.nyu.edu/education/teachlearn/fasttrack/>

This is an issue you have to reckon with. I live in a major European
city and know many TESOL teachers. Most of them have CELTA/DELTA,
Trinity, TEFL, and sometimes, have no formal qualifications, only
talent and mother-tongue level of the language. In fact, outside the
British Coucil Teaching Centre, I don't know many who hold TESOL
degrees. So, if you're planning on teaching abroad, not only that a
formal TESOL degree is not as important, but formal certification as a
teacher in the United States is certainly of less significance. Many
places value experience, charisma (or natural talent for teaching) and
knowledge on certificates.

On the other hand, if you're planning to teach TESL in the United
States, especially in billingual/multi-cultural schools or to
immigrants (in other words: in State sponsored programmes), it is
essential that you'll fill the State's requirements for teachers'
certification as well as have a relevant degree. Therefore, you'd
better check with the State's Department of Education, what the
requierments for TESL teacher are (usually the universities also know
them).

Several programmes also have an aspect of certification. Most US-based
programmes last 2 years and more. Here are several that,
theoretically, could be finished within 18 months:

1.	Adelphi, NY http://academics.adelphi.edu/edu/edstudies/tesol.shtml
(3-4 Semsters)

2.	Asuza Pacific University http://www.apu.edu/tesol/ (18 Months)

3.	UCLA ?http://www.humnet.ucla.edu/humnet/al/frames/madegreereqs.htm 6 quarters

4.	Monterey Institute of International Studies
http://www.miis.edu/gslel-progs-degcertover.html (3 sems)

5.	Georgia State University
http://www.gsu.edu/%7Ewwwesl/alesl/gradhome.htm (if one takes Summer
term as well, in 18 months).

6.	University of Miami
http://www.education.miami.edu/program/programs_List.asp?Location_Flag=ON&Career=G

Canada
======

None of the programmes listed in the Canadian TESL Federation could be
completed within one year; the only degree programme listed is offered
by the University of Calgary, but could be finished within 2-3 years.
TESL Canada

Australia
=========

From here, things surely improve. Both in Australia as well as in the
UK, there are many MA/MEd/MSc programmes that could be finished within
a year. However, since life cannot be easy, most of them require
either CELTA/Trinity, previous experience in the field, or relevant
first degree (i.e., in education or in English). However, there is
usually an opportunity for "special admission", and some of them
include the CELTA in their degree.

This is not really a request for clarification. It is to say thank you
for a very thorough answer and to post a comment.

You are correct in saying that obtaining a degree is something we will
have to think about. We are considering teaching English as a foreign
language outside of the USA or Canada after retirement. At this point
we are only evaluating ideas, but had thought we might seek a
university degree to (a) bolster our confidence level to teach and (b)
to set ourselves apart from the pack when it comes time to locate a
teaching position.

Your response may likely cause us no longer consider the degree option
and focus on CELTA/DELTA,Trinity, TEFL certification. Thank you for
your help.

I wish you all the best.

I would like just to note, that from the forums (like Dave's ESL Cafe,
which recommend you to join and ask questions), I understood that
schools in Asia prefer in fact a degree, and schools in Asia (I mean
here Korea and Japan, not PRC, which is by the way the fastets growing
market of ESL services) may not take someone without a degree.
However, in Europe, Latin America, and other areas, this would not be
a problem.
