We've got a new shepard puppy. There's several milestones in
schutzhund training, I'd like to find a comprehensive list. For
example, at 8 weeks the puppy should be socialized, learn its name,
and to sit. At 12 weeks basic tracking training should begin, etc.
I'd like to have this list and transfer it to a calendar, so we don't
miss starting something early so we have a good sport dog.

Hi draxe,

Thank you for requesting the question to be answered. Unfortunately,
there isn't much information available online, because most all
information regarding Schutzhund Theory and Training Methods, can be
found in books or videos which you can purchase.

I found one site on the internet that might interest you:

Training (Schutzhund)
http://users.skynet.be/hexental/training.htm

It is *extremely* difficult to read (fonts and colors) however, if you
can manage to work your way through the pages, you'll find timeframes
on when to start specific schutzhund training.

I had a hard time reading that site's pages, but it does get very
detailed on timelines. Perhaps you'll find what you need there.

Best of luck with your new pup!

Hi Draxe. I have a new shepherd puppy, too. She is almost 10 weeks old.

The earlier poster is correct. No one seems to want to give much away
for free over the Net.

Also, dog trainers seem to disagree on many things. Even worse, most
of them seem to think that their way is the only way. Almost every
protection trainer you meet will insist that inflicting pain is
necessary to solicit a bite reaction. I am fortunate enough to know,
lately through friends and earlier in life as a classmate, one of the
top dog trainers in the country, and he and his trainers never use
physical pain in protection, Schutzhund, or any other training. This
is a good example of one of the many discrepancies among trainers.

Maybe if you could meet a trainer in person and view the dogs he or
she is producing, that would be of some help in legitimizing the
trainer's methods. Best wishes with your new companion.

Yep, we have several books and trainer. My question is not so much
how as when. I was hoping someone had posted a timeline on the net.

Hi daytrader-

It's a common misconception that compulsion is an effective training
method. You may get the dog to comply, but it ruins their spirit,
they're never the same after. I agree with you it's cruel- we use
food and prey drive in the intial training stages- the bite work is
all a game. There's huge difference between a dog working in prey or
fight than a dog biting from fear. You might enjoy www.leerburg.com.

Thanks tlspiegel- I went back and read the page (rather than skim it)-
it's close enough, I consider the question answered. That was an
interesting sight daytrader, good luck with your pup too!
