Question ID: 395687
Will the Apple-Branded NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL work in a PC
using NVIDIA PC drivers?

If so, can this card be used to drive the new Apple 30" Cinema Display
at full resolution under Windows XP?

Please don't guess. Reading the specs, I'd guess that it will work,
but before I order $3K+ worth of hardward, I'd like to know for sure.

Thanks.

Hello -

According to a representative at Nvidia, the GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL
card is a very different card made by Apple for G5's. It will not
work on a PC.

If you require any further information, please feel free to ask.

Thank you.

According to Nvidia, you will need a Dual-link DVI-compatible card,
such as the PNY Quadro FX series (3000, 3400, or 4000) to run the 30"
monitor. The actual Nvidia chip names are Quadro as well.

See http://www.pny.com/products/quadro for details.

See froogle.com and pricegrabber.com to find the lowest prices on these cards.

Quadro FX 3000 and its PCI-Express version, the Quadro FX 3400, will
support one Apple 30" display at full resolution (3000 and 3400 have
one Dual-link DVI and one Single-link DVI outputs).

Quadro FX 4000 and its PCI-Express version, the Quadro FX 4400, will
support two Apple 30" displays at full resolution (they have two
Dual-link DVI outputs).

And the chipset used in the Quadro 3000-and-up family of cards is the
NV40GL which is based on the core NV40 used in the Geforce 6800
series.

I took the advice of the thread and found through experience that the
Quadro FX 3000 does not with the 30" Apple Cinema Display.

The newer FX 3400 and 4000 will work however. There are a few users
from the Apple Discussion Support section that have successfully
reported using the 30" Cinema Display successfully on these two cards.

Hope this helps.

I installed an FX 3400 in my PC yesterday and it is working fine with
the 30" Cinema Display at full 2560x1600x32 resulution at 60Hrz
refresh rate.

I will say however, that the result is a little harsh. Windows draws
certain UI elements like underlines and boxes based on pixel size.
Since the pixels on this monitor are so small, these elements are very
small and hurt to look at. There also does not seem to be any way to
control the brightness on the monitor under windows.

Finally, becuase of a PCMall screw up, I ended up with both the HP and
the PNY version of the FX 3400. Despite the significant difference in
the of the two models, these both apear to be the exact same card with
the only differences being in packaging and included items. Then PNY
version includes 2 DVI-VGA converters and a power supply Y cables. The
HP version includes a plastic PCI-Express pulling tool.

I just got the Cinema 30" Display to work properly with the Quadro FX
3000. There is a problem with the versions of cards out there. The
very early Quadro FX 3000's released may not have the dual-link
feature correctly implemented.

I then tried the ACD 30" with a newer PNY Quadro FX 3000 card and the
display now works beautifully with it!

So just watch out for early Quadro FX 3000 cards. The newer ones
should be fine and not have any problems.

I'm looking to buy 20 of the 30" Cinema displays to run along with
the PNY Quadro 3000 card on Dell Workstations. I'm getting varied
information about this setup and was wondering if anyone could answer
some questions sometime. You can reach me at this address.

There seem to be alternatives to the rather expensive Nvidia Quadro cards.

Matrox offers the Matrox Parhelia DL256 PCI especially to operate the
30" Apple display on a PC (PCI-X).

The 3Dlabs Wildcat Realizm 200 has two Dual Link DVI outputs, but I
don't know whether it can drive the 30" display. In theory it should
be able to drive two of them.

The 30" cinema display works in full resolution on a PC with a Verto
geforce 6600GT (not 6800) dual DVI that I bought from comp USA for
$199 (7-51492-24662-8 is the number ion the proof of purchase tab). I
got the latest drivers from nvidia (71.84 3/11/2005 release) for
windows XP and it wrks perfect.

The apple card will not work as it will not plug in to the AGP slot
due to some extra connectors on the card.

You can find a description of a dual 30" display setup with a Realizm
200 and a Quadro 4000 here:

I took the advice of nubulin-ga and bought the Verto GeForce 6600GT -
works like a charm - running at 2560x1600 with the 30 inch apple
cinema display!
Thanks nubulin-ga!
I haven't played many games or used the CAD programs yet, but getting
up and running with this saved me mucho dinero!
And I didn't have to order the card from somewhere that doesn't take
returns(most websites with the highter end cards). Got mine from
BestBuy.

Howdy

Well I guess it's a bit late now but for anyone else with these
considerations they should also know about the fire GL v5000 card
(http://www.ati.com/products/fireglv5000/) ATI has been aggresively
targetting this particular sector of the market(that is:workstation
graphics cards) and as a result offer considerably better deals
compared with the Nvidia offerings. I just got a ATI fireGL V3200 and
am very happy with it. This card is also considerably better priced
than it's Nvidia competitor and it has better DirectX preformance
making it good for gaming also.

Hello chadfind-ga and nubulin-ga,

I am thinking of getting the Apple 30" .

Can you tell me whether the
Nvidia Geforce 6600 GT is a
"8X AGP" OR "PCI Enhance" connection
so I can get the correct card.

Thank You.

I am using PNY 6600GT with 30" Apple too, works fine, expect one
problem. Any application that plays video in overlay or VMR9 mode,
under full screen, the video screen is broken (only 3/4 or 4/5 half of
left has video, right side is black)....for example DVD player or
Windows Media, etc. it's only the full screen mode.
I wonder if anyone else has the same problem, if not, any tips? Which
version of card driver you're using? Thanks.

I just bought the Apple 30 Inch Cinema display and a Verto GeForce 6600GT.
It works fine in normal mode, though it does seem to be limited with
the accepted resolutions 2560X1600, 1600X900, 1280X800 and 800X600.
I would like to know if anyone has been able to play games succesfully
with this setup?
I tried to run Halo, and all I get is a blank screen. Also, when
trying to watch streaming video from MSN the picture is wavy.
Does anyone have any configuration advise? Or are they seeing the same?

In addition to Wootie's comments, we bought a fire GL v5000 to drive
an Apple Cinema 30" display. We're able to run it at 1/2 resolution,
but when we set it to full resolution, the image expands bigger than
the monitor. We end up scrolling around to see anything off-screen.
I'm wondering if there are drivers I'm missing for the monitor (in
addition to graphics cards drivers). I'll keep looking and post if I
find something.... Meanwhile I'll just live with 1/2 resolution.

For the people using the 6600GT -- do you need a special adapter to
use this with the Apple 30" ?

I upgraded my Desktop to HP 7100DC, I would like to use my Apple 30-Inch Monitor.
I can use only PCI Express vga card so I took the advice of nubulin-ga
and bought the Verto GeForce 6600GT PCI Express but it doesn't work,
my screen is still black i checked my monitor with Mac - laptop, it
works fine so the problem is with my Verto GeForce 6600GT card.

Can you tell me whether the Nvidia Geforce 6600 GT is a
"8X AGP" OR PCI Express that works in your PC?

Thanks
