Dear Jetsun,

"Major awards" is of course a subjective thing. I note here the most
prominent awards, but if you feel that you would like to know more
about a specific award, please let me know.

Academy Awards
=============
The most important award is of course, the Academy Awards (a.k.a,
"Oscars"). "The Academy Awards (often better known as Oscars) are the
most prominent film award in the United States. The Awards are granted
by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a professional
honorary organization which as of 2003 had a voting membership of
5816. Actors (with a membership of 1311) make up the largest voting
block. The most recent awards were the 76th Academy Awards.
Academy Awards are nicknamed "Oscars", which is also the nickname of
the statuette (the name is said to have been born when Academy
librarian Margaret Herrick saw the statuette on a table and said: "It
looks just like my uncle Oscar!"). The awards were first given at a
banquet in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on May
16, 1929? (SOURCE: Wikipedia, Aacademy Awards, <
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Awards>).
Regarding the most awarded films, ?The greatest number of Academy
Awards won by a film is 11, this distinction is shared by 3 films:
Ben-Hur, Titanic, and The Return of the King. Many observers felt that
The Return of the King stood in for the entire The Lord of the Rings
movie trilogy.? (Ibid.). Of those, Ben-Hur, in fact, did not win the
?Best Picture? award (SOURCE and another list of top winners,

Golden Globe Awards
=================
?The Golden Globe Awards are awards given out each year during a
formal dinner, for motion pictures and television programs. Run by the
Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) since 1944, these are
usually regarded as the third most publicized awards for movies and
television, after the Academy Awards (for film) and Emmy Awards (for
television). The awards are voted on by a group of about 90
international journalists working in Hollywood, California.
The Golden Globes are touted as the preludes to the Oscars. Until
2003, the awards had been scheduled so that the Academy of Motion
Picture Arts and Sciences sent out their ballots for the Academy
Awards only days after the Golden Globe award winners are announced.?

Cannes Film Festival
===============
IMDB summary http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Awards/Cannes_Film_Festival/
. The award is given to films, not to individuals. Naturally, each
year (since 1946) , another film wins. In 1946, 11 films won the
Golden Palm.

European Film Awards
===================================
Granted since 1988, grants awards to European movies. A list of the
winners could be found at IMDB
<http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Awards/European_Film_Awards/>

Calculations
=========
Based on the two major awards that grant prizes to individuals, Walt
Disney won the most prizes so far, mostly as a producer. Jack
Nicholson, as an actor, and Billy Wilder and Francis Ford Coppola as
directors. The most awarded actress is Katharine Hepburn.

I hope this answers your question. Please contact me if you need any
clarification on this answer before you rate it.

Thank you Politicalguru,

Thank you for this information. I am interested in a list of
directors that inspired there actors to receive the most awards. And
I am assuming the director is the individual most commonly known to
solicit the actor for the part.

In a given year the director may not directly receive an award but
there actors/actress may. This would change the dynamics of who I
consider the most talented director/producer. This type of brake down
would be very much appreciated. Even if you just provide the
information for the Academy Awards.

Good Luck,

Jetsun

Dear Jetsun,

I am sorry that you need more clarifications. The wording of your
original question did not suggest such a request.

I am still not clear on what you want me to do. Do you want me to do
through the lists of best production, best film, best actor/actresses
(both in leading and supporting roles) and find out which director was
"responsible" for the most oscars - also for his/her actors?

Since such a list does not exist (as far as I know), I would have to
compile it, which would take several days of work (since the Oscars
are granted since 1927...)

There is also a methodological fault in such a compiliation. Winning
an academy award, or any other awards, is not always an indicator of
anything. First of all, because there is always a tight competition
between studios, the nominees are all very good, and it is not only
good acting that determines who'd win: it could be the role they
played (charcters who suffer from an illness or disability are more
likely to win the Oscars as other nominees the same year); it could be
as a general expression of appreciation for the actor and his career;
a consolation prize for not winning other prizes; and it could be due
to better studio PR .

<http://www.channel4.com/news/2004/01/week_4/26_oscar.html>

Filmsite, Academy Awards - Best Actor <http://www.filmsite.org/bestactor.html>

In other hand, it could mean nothing about the director. And moreover,
a great director who is either foreign or independent, has no chance
in Hollywood. A great director/producer who does mostly popular
movies, might be on the other hand shunned by the Hollywood
aristocracy, even when he (always) does great films. When he does a
film about "heavy" subjects such as the Holocaust or WWII, he
"deserves" an Oscar, even if his previous films were just as good.
Some don't even get an oscar: Would the fact that Orson Welles was not
even nominated for one mean that his Citizen Kane is anything less
than a masterpiece?

In addition to all of that, there are high chances that a director
would choose a cast he'd been satisfied with before, which means that
the statistics, even if it had been an indicator of "good directors
that cause their actors to win an oscar", is biased: an actor is
chosen over again because he already worked successfully with the
director.

The site Filmsite made a list of "The Greatest Films of All Times".
Needless to say, that many of the films that won the Oscar for the
Best Actor/Actresses are not in that list. The fact that they had good
acting does not make them one of the "best" films of all times.
SEE: Filmsite's list of Oscar Mistakes <http://www.filmsite.org/noawards.html>

However, this might partially answer your question: The list of the
films that won the most oscars contains only three who won all 5 big
prizes (male + female leading roles, director, best picture and best
script):
* It Happened One Night (1934) - diercted by Frank Capra.
* One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975) - directed by Milos Forman
* The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - diercted by Jonathan Demme

Capra won an Oscar twice more, for You Can't Take It with You (1938)
and for Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936). In both cases, his actors have
been nominated for an oscar, but haven't won. None of his actors won.

Forman won another Oscar, for Amadeus. In both cases, his lead actor
(F. Murray Abraham and Jack Nicholson) have won an Oscar for leading
role. In the case of Won Flew Over, Louise Fletcher (as the nurse) won
an oscar as leading female role.

In the third case, both Foster and Hopkins won an oscar under Demme.
However, this is Demme's sole oscar.

The director whose actors might have won the most oscars (under his
direction, of course), is William Wyler, the director of Ben Hur
(among many other films). Three dozen of his actors won Oscars or
nominations, incl. 2 for Ben-Hur, 2 for "The Best Years of Our Lives",
and 2 for "Mrs. Miniver".
