"Human placental extract" is an ingredient used by Nu Skin, but I
haven't been able to learn anything about the company's source of
placentas.

Here's NuSkin's response:

Thank you for contacting Nu Skin Product Support. To address this
question, Nu Skin does NOT use human placental extract (HPX) from
aborted placental tissue. Nu Skin's source of HPX is derived under
stringently controlled conditions from full term human placental
tissue. HPX is a phenomenal ingredient which offers a rich source of
proteins and mineral salts, which are beneficial to the skin. HPX is
used in the HPX Hydrating Gel because it is an excellent moisturizer
and emollient. Emollients are ingredients that soften and smooth the
skin.

HPX is completely safe to use as a cosmetic ingredient. Although the
FDA does not require pre-market testing of cosmetic products or
ingredients, the FDA may take legal steps to have products or
ingredients removed from the market if they prove to be health
hazards. Both animal and human placental extracts have been used for
years in cosmetic products without any concerns from the FDA. An FDA
release on HPX in cosmetic products states: "The substance is
non-toxic and not considered to be hazardous to health."

The placentas from which the HPX is derived are obtained strictly from
hospital sources and stringent procedures are followed to prevent
microbial pollution during removal and handling. Every placenta is
screened for the HIV and B Hepatitis viruses before being processed.
The placentas are also run through a dialysis procedure to remove all
estrogen-containing material. The extract is then processed briefly at
an elevated temperature to destroy any harmful bacteria. Blood and
blood by-products are removed during this processing procedure, so
they are not found in HPX.

In obtaining HPX, our supplier uses only full-term afterbirths. They
process large amounts of Human Placental Extract, 80% of which is used
for medicinal purposes. The remaining 20% undergoes an identical
extraction procedure and is used in cosmetics. Since Human Placental
Extract is used in treating illnesses, consistency and accuracy are
essential when producing this ingredient. With this in mind, an assay
is done on each batch produced to determine the quality and
consistency of the finished product.

It is NOT possible to extract the same quality of product from an
aborted placenta. The placenta develops just as the fetus does. Hence,
placental properties vary according to degree of maturation. HPX, if
removed at full term, is a richer source of desired proteins than
animal placental extracts, or extracts derived from aborted placentas.
Therefore, HPX is only processed from full-term placentas in order to
obtain the desired quality extract.

Nu Skin has thoroughly investigated the sources and processing of HPX.
We are satisfied that the ingredient is safe to use and involve only
full-term placentas.

I hope this information is helpful and addresses any concerns you may
have with human placental extracts. If you have further questions,
please contact Pharmanex Product Support at 1-800-487-1000 or by
