Hi, I'm a third year medical student with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and pharmacology. I hope this can help. Prolactin is controlled by the neurotransmitter dopamine. When the levels of dopamine being sent to the anterior pituitary (one of the key brain structures that control your body's hormone levels) are high, prolactin release is blocked. Therefore, when dopamine levels decrease, prolactin increases. The most important drugs that decrease dopamine levels are the anti-psychotic medications. These include haloperidol, clozipine, olanzipine, risperidone, phenothiazines, butyrophenones, metoclopramide, sulpiride, and domperidone. Other medications that increase prolactin levels include |

(cont'd) the antihypertensive drugs methyldopa and reserpine. The calcium channel blocker verapamil and estrogens also increase prolactin levels. The only natural products that would help increase prolactin levels are ones that would contain natural estrogens. Soy and yam roots are the only natural products that I know of that contain significant amounts of estrogens. |

There is no reason to as the effect of prolactin in males is not understood. |
