About 6 months ago I read an article about a piece of software that
could tell you (unknown to the recipient) when your email was opened,
how long it was open, and whether it was forwarded.

Hello pwd_trawler,

ActiveTracker Email Tracking

The ActiveTracker Plugin is easy to use and works with all email
clients, including Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, all versions
of Netscape, Eudora, Pegasus, IncrediMail, and every other SMTP
compatible email program on any version of Windows.

This plugin gives you the full tracking history of your email, usually including:

Exactly when your email was opened.

How long it was read for.

Whether or not your email was forwarded to someone else.

If it was forwarded, where is was forwarded to, sometimes including
who subsequently reads it.

Approximately where your reader is located (nearest town or city).

How many times your email was re-opened and re-read, as well as when
and where etc.

What kind of email software your reader is using.

What kind of computer and operating system your reader uses.

What languages your reader can accept or understand.

What kinds of email attachments your reader can view (eg: Microsoft
documents, or Adobe files, etc).

If your email gets published online, you can find this out too, as
well as where (the URL) usually.

?Full Tracking, so you can reliably find out when your email gets
opened, how long it gets read for, whether or not it gets forwarded to
someone else or published on the internet, where the reader is
located, and much more.?

Another option is ReadNotify.com

?Tracking your emails with ReadNotify is really pretty easy. All you
have to do is add readnotify.com to the end of your recipients email
address. (They'll never see it) Your email is then directed to pass
through their server, where they assign it a tracking code, "strip
off" the .readnotify.com part and send it on to your recipient. When
they open your email, the assigned tracking code sends their server a
message and they report the details to you.

ReadNotify.com doesn't use any kind of spyware or install anything
onto your recipients computer in order to track emails. They promise
not to read your email or send any spam.

Just using their basic tracking feature, you can...

Track the date and time your email was opened, and how many times it
was opened and even how long they spent reading it!
Track the location of your recipient. (including a map)
Track your recipients IP address.
Track to see If your email was forwarded, or opened on a different
computer,including their email address.
Track your links. If you include any links in your email, they can
track whether or not your recipient clicked on them. See if your sig
file is working.
Track MS Word or Excel documents. You can find out if your co-workers
are reading your attachments.?

?This is not a free service, but of course you can try it for free.
The basic service costs $4 a month for 350 emails. (unused emails do
not expire; they accumulate indefinitely)

This software won't make those procrastinators respond to you any
quicker, but it will give you some peace of mind in "knowing" that
someone has at least read your message.?

You can also use http://WhenTheyReadIT.com services - Its completely
