When I go to a web page using Internet Explorer 6.1 (all updates) and
I click on a URL nothing happens. I have to right click the URL and
select "Open in new window" to get it to open. My Operating System is
Windows 2000 Professional.

Thanks,

Doug

Hi, thanks for your comments.
I have tried all the suggestions to no avail. I have downloaded and
reinstalled many times. I have good AV and spyware software. Other
browsers do solve this problem but IE works with Outlook Express and I
want to be able to click a link in my emails and have IE open too.

Holding down the shift key will work on a web page but that is the
same as clicking "open in new window." I do have "Hijack This", but no
help there either. These problems showed up about a month ago; before
that it was fine.

I've searched the Microsoft Knowledgebase, also to no avail :(

Andrew, I believe that did it! Everything seems to be working properly again.
After I went through the list of dll's I think that did it. I checked all of the
registry entries and they were ok.

Thank you, Andrew, and everyone else who posted.
It is really nice to be able to interact with such
nice people.

I would first verify that there is no spyware/adware/malware on the
machine. I have seen this as a symptom of infection before.
Here are some good tools to use to check:
Ad-aware SE (there is a free version for download, I believe)
Spybot Search & Destroy (avail for free at
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)
Hijack this (this is good for BHO's which infect the browser, but you
must use the related forum for instructions on what to remove. DO NOT
just select stuff to remove on your own, as you could leave your
system unusable)

Try to click the URL with the Shift key pressed.A new window will open too.
Maybe you system has been damaged by virus, use an antivirus software
such as Norton and live update it to latest to scan your computer.
If you are sure that it was not the virus, download the IE from
microsoft and install it again.Or,you can try another brownser.

I found this in the Microsoft KB that might help.

"You cannot open a new Internet Explorer window or nothing occurs
after you click a link"

Just a suggestion you can download Mozilla Thunderbird, an email client.
