Question ID: 431718
In which cities is Brokeback Mountain currently being shown? Also, I'd
like a breakdown of the number of theaters per city and average
revenue per theater.
For example, I've seen an article which said Columbus Ohio had 11,000
revenue per screen over the last weekend.

Can you help me with this?

Johnster,

I was not able to locate in which cities Brokeback Mountain is
currently being shown, or the number of theaters per city; however I
did find some numbers. Please take a look at the information below and
let me know if it is of any use to you.

Thanks, Bobbie7

Currently Brokeback Mountain is being shown in 483 theaters in the
United States and will go into wide release with 700 theaters on
January 13, 2006.

"Brokeback Mountain saw limited release in the United States on
December 9, 2005 (in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco), taking
$547,425 in just five theaters in its first weekend.

According to several sources, including TV Guide and indiewire , this
was the highest per-showing average for any drama in film history.
Over the Christmas weekend it posted the highest per theater gross of
any movie and was lauded as a box office success not only in urban
centers such as New York City and Los Angeles, but in suburban
theaters near Portland, Dallas, Denver, and Atlanta.

On January 7, 2006, the movie opened to its widest screening yet,
moving from 269 theaters since January 1 to 483.

In doing so it took in its largest one-day gross to date at $ 1.7
million in the U.S. However, the film's total box office receipts are
relatively low due to the limited number of theaters it is showing on.

As of January 8, 2006 "Brokeback Mountain" has earned a total of $22.4
million in the United States and Canada

Focus Features, the movie's distributor, is planning to release the
film to several hundred or more screens in North America by the end of
January 2006.

According to boxofficemojo.com Brokeback Mountain will go into wide
release with 700 theaters on January 13, 2006."

Regarding the per-theater box office take of "Brokeback Mountain," the
most recent issue of Entertainment Weekly (January 13, 2006) gives a
per-site average of $18,020. This was for the holiday weekend of
December 30 - January 2, when the movie was showing on 269 screens.
Entertainment Weekly gets its data from Nielsen EDI.

Dear Johnster,

Belwo you will find additional revenue figures.

Nashville: $37,000

"Interesting tidbit from Tom Wood at NashvillePost.com: Daily Variety
reported that Brokeback Mountain raked in $37,000 at one Nashville
theater alone in its first expansion weekend?a figure more than double
the national average. Last weekend at Green Hills, Wood writes, long
lines formed well before the shows; others say multiple screenings
sold out in advance."

From USA Today:

"Brokeback Mountain is averaging $10,000-plus per screen in such
markets as San Antonio, Nashville and Columbus, Ohio, according to
Nielsen EDI.

The Ang Lee film was ninth at the box office this weekend with $5.8
million on 483 screens, a healthy $11,904 per-screen average. That's a
higher average than the No. 1 movie of the week, Hostel."

Per-screen average of $34,194

"The critically acclaimed drama "Brokeback Mountain," starring Heath
Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, rode into the top 10 in its second weekend
after distributor Focus Features expanded it to 69 theaters in 21
markets from just a handful the previous weekend.

The love story between two cowboys finished in eighth place after
taking in an estimated $2.4 million. It had an outstanding per-screen
average of $34,194, by far the highest of any film in release."

"Brokeback Mountain continued to surprise analysts over the weekend as
the so-called gay cowboy love story emerged once again as the highest
earner on a per-theater basis among films showing on more than 50
screens. Brokeback earned $13,599 per theater, far surpassing the
$9,305 for King Kong and $8,225 for The Chronicles of Narnia: The
Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Brokeback is currently showing in
only 217 theaters, roughly 7 percent the number that are showing the
two box-office leaders.

"..its opening weekend, Brokeback netted over $108,000 per screen at
venues like the West Hollywood-adjacent Grove, when the movie branched
out into the more sexually ambiguous confines of the Arclight (okay,
not so ambiguous) and Sherman Oaks? Galleria, the per-theater revenues
dropped to $34,194."

(...)

"As expected, best perfs came in more liberal cities, including
Toronto, New York and L.A., where the film?s best per play takes
reached over $70,000.

However, ?Brokeback??s best per play takes in other cities included an
estimated $56,000 at a theater in Atlanta, $50,000 in Phoenix, $49,000
in Houston, $35,000 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and $33,000 in St. Louis.
In some of those cities, it was playing on only one screen.

Pic had lower, but still solid takes in suburban markets in
Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and California."

I may have been scanning Bobbi's list too quickly and the listing's
there, but I don't I don't see JACKSON, WYOMING aka JACKSON HOLE,
where "Brokeback" is playing. I know 'cause a friend of the family
owns the theater. In fact, as of last week anyway, that theater was
the only theater in the entire state of Wyoming showing the film and
the New York Times interviewed the owner.
"Brokeback Mountain" takes place in Wyoming. . . but they actually
shot the movie in Canada (Calgary).

Hi Bobbi,

Sorry for getting back to you so late.

One more question. As far as revenues, you couldn't find anything
regarding Brokeback's average per city or per theater. On two
different occasions, I read articles either in the Dallas Morning News
or USA Today that had figures for a few select cities such as
Columbus, Nashville, and Milwaukee. I just wonder where they got those
numbers.

Please get back to me when you can and we'll wrap this up.

Bobbie and johnster. . . Johnster, you asked where the box office
numbers come that you've been reading. The key film industry box
office tracking company is EXHIBITOR RELATIONS. The studios report
their weekend guestimates on Sunday and late afternoon they issue a
report -- and that's what you read in papers the next day or hear on
your 10 or 11 pm news on Sunday night.

You have to subscribe to Exhibitor Relations to get all the data. . .
but here's a Dec. 7th newspaper article that quotes the President,
Paul Dergaribedian, who the media looks to for an overview every
week:b

"In December, Focus Features released ``Brokeback Mountain'' to the
highest domestic per-screen average ever recorded: $109,485 in five
theaters. That's impressive, but less so given those five theaters
were in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, markets you might
expect to pony up to a movie about gay cowboys.

``Brokeback'' has played in more theaters and smaller markets every
week since its release. Last weekend it reached 269 screens, up 52
from the previous week, with a 61 percent jump in attendance from the
previous week. According to Variety, last weekend's per-screen
averages were $37,000 in Nashville; $44,000 in Columbus, Ohio; and
$32,000 in Milwaukee -- towns with more of a middle-America makeup
than the big coastal cities where the film made its debut.

New Year's weekend, the movie pulled in $4.8 million for a four-day
per-screen average of $18,000 and a 25-day total of $15 million.
``Brokeback'' was slated to add 120 screens on Friday.

Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box office tracking company
Exhibitor Relations, says ``Brokeback'' appears to be built for the
long haul.

``For it to sustain an $18,000 average in that many theaters says that
it's doing well across the board,'' says Dergarabedian.

Compare the 269 screens for ``Brokeback'' to the 3,583 for ``Narnia''
and you get some idea of the apples-and-oranges nature of the box
office race. Where you can't cast a stone without hitting a theater
that shows ``Narnia'' and ``Kong'' (at 3,627 screens and counting),
``Brokeback'' is treading slowly into red-state America. But as
Dergarabedian suggests, the early returns have been positive."
