Okay, so maybe we should extend this to all the English speaking world . . . . ?

In looking down the list of crop circle occurances I was struck by
some of the names . . . Cheesefoot Head and Cheesefoot Bottom, Gander
Down, etc, etc.

I wonder what are some of the funniest place names in the English speaking world?

The answerfinder most likely will provide us with just the site . . .

The winning commenter will receive 'Five Twinklies' * * * * * to put in your hat!

P'raps if we're really clever we could put it all to poetry . . .

To kick things off, here's a poem which includes several funnies from
the Pacific North Wet:

(place names in CAPS - almost all Native American origin, I think)

Chet loved to WALLA WALLA
In breakers warm and wet
In all DUWAMISH water
Would splash and WOLLOCHET.

And was he brave?
WENATCHEE!
And also ELOCHOMAN
?Til LATAH he fell in with
A LILLIWAUP named Anne.

ALLALLA PALOUSE was Annie
?Lor LUMMI, wasn?t she though?
She had ASOTIN something
That should have laid CHETLO.

She saw him in DEWATTO,
Afloatin? on his back,
With TATOOSH on his TUMTUM
That made her lips go smack!

Now WHATCOM over Annie?
?Twas love ATTALIA that,
Her heart went HAMMA HAMMA,
Her teeth went KLICKITAT!

She said, ?You are MALOTT dear;
WYNOOCHEE kiss me pet??
The MATTAWA her ardor,
Was not returned by Chet.

So ANACORTES Chester,
She has to HAVERMALE,
But he replies, ?TONASKET!
OHOP off. Hit the trail!?

?NASELLE me your embraces,?
She begs him with sweet moan.
?My family?s ALGONA
And I must sleep alone.?

With METHOW in her madness,
Once more the girl began.
?I SEKIU, and you only . . .
ALAVA you!? SPOKANE.

cheers!

Dear timespacette-ga:

Thank you for letting me have fun with your question and for choosing
me as the winner in your short humor contest.

My all time favorite strange place name is Toad Suck, Arkansas. Not
only because the name is weird, but because of the mystery surrounding
the origin of it's name. There are many debateable versions of how the
name came to be and it's fun to try and solve the mystery. I've
actually been to Toad Suck and it's a wonderful place in spite of it's
odd name.

other places got their names!

I like Chipping Sodbury.

Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles (1966) contains many
more, including (in alphabetical order) Barton-in-the-Beans, Deaf Hill
cum Langdale, Freezywater, Kill St Nicholas, Middle Wallop, Over
Peover, Pennycumquick, Up Ottery and Zeal Monachorum.
Another reference book - Oliver Mason's Gazetteer of England (1972)
- includes Old Sodbury in Gloucestershire, Bag Enderby in Lincolnshire
and Upperthong in Yorkshire. It also contains some neat pairings:
Great Snoring and Little Snoring; Down St Mary and Peasedown St John.

There is also the village in Innviertel in upper Austria, pronounced
'fooking' but spelt, ahem, well a google search for fooking innviertel
will produce results, including one in Chinese!

My favourite is Boggart Hole Clough ...

'Tis somewhere near where I was born in Oldham (pronounced Owdam or
Howdam if you are posh) in Lancashire, North West of Angleterre.

Can't think why.

In addition to what I have already offered, in both Arkansas and Texas
there are towns named "Possum Kingdom". In Texas, there is even a
State Park named that.

Here are some others in Arkansas:

There is a town called "Scrouge Out":

I used to live in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. It's not a funny name, but I
thought it was very picturesque. My online friends pictured me in the
Wild West, living in a log cabin with a conestoga wagon parked in the
driveway.

Hi TS,

I have found reference to Heaven, Hell and even Shag Island of the
Pacific. I have been looking for the comedic STORY of Australian place
names for you to no avail. It's a play on words including Wilcannia
(Well can ya?) and Gundagai (Gunned a guy). Not to be confused with
the SONG "I've been everywhere man".

Another element you might enjoy is the use of palindromes. TUMUT, NSW
and GLENELG, SA are two that I recall. I believe that there is at
least a third in Australia.

Might the following reference prove to have found the funniest place
name? I'm unsure as to it's population, yet by definition, it remains
as a place.

Hope the gods of GA do not smite us . . .
