There may have already been done genealogical research going backwards
from one Thomas Kilbourne in the 1600s in Wood Ditton, England. There
is a Wood Ditton site that mentions him. Rather than reinvent the
wheel, I would like someone to search what is available on the web and
see what has been done. For instance, Thomas' father was apparently
John. I would like to see if there is any link to a coat of arms
bearing three coots.

Dear kilboj,

I have done my best to locate as many ancestors of Thomas Kilbourne as
possible. Although he is mentioned in many genealogical lists and
family trees on the Web, the family lineage is far from being clear.
Most of the dates vary very much, so I had to decide what dates appear
most logical and realistic. The same is true for places. For example,
some sources say that Thomas Kilbourne died in England, while other
say that he died in Connceticut. In that case, I fortunately found
evidence that he indeed spent his last days in America. In other
cases, things were much more difficult. As a result of my work, I have
assembled a list of all ancestors I could find. I also included the
earliest ancestor, John Kilburn from Yorkshire, although the
conncection appears a bit dubious to me. Please note that the
generations count "backwards", starting with Thomas Kilbourne.

Concerning the family crest, things are quite obscure. I have found an
image of what reportedly is the family's coat-of-arms at House of
Names:
http://www.houseofnames.com/i/shim.gif (see also the sources section
at the end of this answer)
However, it would take a skilled expert in heraldry and heraldic
research to find out whether the ancestors of Thomas Kilbourne had any
conncetion with the family bearing that crest. It is possible that
Thomas' family was only named Kilbourne for their place of origin, and
not for a connection with those bearing that coat-of-arms. See also:

Though certain details in the ancestry list may be uncertain or
arguable, I nevertheless hope that it will be of value for you!
Very best regards,
Scriptor

-- Notes --

[1]
"In England, Thomas Kilbourne was a church warden in his native parish
ot St. Mary's. When he arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, he
probably did not find the religious atmosphere to his liking. Within
the year, he moved his family to Wethersfield, Connecticut.
Wethersfield is the oldest organized town in Connecticut. Thomas
Kilbourne was one of its first settlers. He is reportedly the first
person to build a home there. His home was on the west side of Broad
Street. He served as juror, grand juror, and deputy of the town.
It is believed that Thomas Kilbourn met his demise on April 23, 1637,
in Wethersfield, just two years after his arrival in the U.S. Two
daughters of Thomas Swayne, another colonist, were captured and
carried off by Pequot Indians. Before they got very far, they were
confronted by a rescue party. Six of the men were massacred. Thomas
Kilburne owned land adjacent to the river in the approximate location
of the massacre, and it is supposed that he was one of the rescuers
who was murdered. The massacre led to a bloody battle between the
British and the Pequot Indiana, known as the Pequot War. The tribe had
more than 2,000 when the English settlers arrived. They were reduced
to only a few hundred."
