Hi ,
The HP Laserjet 1020 does not support a wireless connection. So I'm
not sure how you are attempting to set this up. A different Laserjet
Model like the HP LaserJet 1022nw printer would support Wireless
Printing. Unfortunately the HP LaserJet 1020 Printer does not support
a WIRED network connection either so you would not be able to use your
printer as shared network printer. As far as I can see you have 3
options :
i) Upgrade to a Laser Printer with built-in network ( Wired and/or
Wireless)capability.
ii) Connect the HP Laserjet 1020 to your laptop using the USB Cable ,
install it as a USB Printer and use it.
iii) Connect the HP Laserjet 1020 to a Desktop PC in your office
(which would have a fixed physical location) and install it on the
Desktop PC as a USB Printer. After this SHARE the printer by doing the
following steps :
A)Enable Print and File Sharing ( Windows 2000 and Windows XP do this
by default). For Windows 98 and ME do the following :
i)Right-click Network Neighborhood and choose Properties.

ii)Click the File and Print Sharing button if ?File and print sharing
for Microsoft (R) networks? is not shown in the list of installed
network components.

iii)Insert a check mark into the box for the sharing options you want.

iv)Click OK to save your changes and exit this screen.

v)Follow any instruction messages that appear and restart the computer.

B)Set up the host computer ( the computer to which the Laserjet is
connected directly using a USB Cable and has been installed on).
For this do the following :
i)The printer should be installed and connected to the host following
the directions given for a local (not a network) installation. You
must be logged on as an administrator in Windows NT and 2000 when
installing the software.

ii)On the Windows taskbar, click Start, Settings, and Printers.

iii)Right-click the all-in-one product printer icon and select the
Sharing option. The Properties dialog box will appear with the Sharing
section open.

iv)Click Shared As then enter a unique name for the printer in the
Share Name field to identify the all-in-one product. Write this name
down because it will be required to setup the client PCs.

v)Click OK to finish

C) [ LAST STEP :) ] Setup the remote PC ( in your case this would be
your wireless laptop)
Do the following to complete this step :
i)Point and Print installation :Point and Print is a Microsoft process
for installing and configuring a printer driver on a client computer,
a network computer that is not directly connected to the printer.

At the client computer(i.e your laptop), install the driver using
Point and Print as follows:
In Network Neighborhood ( or "My Network Places") locate the host
computer and double-click the shared printer's name.
( The host computer must be turned on for the printer to be available
to the client computer. )

ii) After step i) try printing from the laptop and you should be able
to print to the HP Laserjet. If not then try the following additional
steps :
#From the Windows system tray, click Start , "Printers and Faxes".
#Double-click the Add Printer icon.
#In the Add Printer Wizard, click Next.
#Select Local printer, and click Next.
#Clear the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer
checkbox, and click Next.
#Select "Create a new port", select Local Port from the Type drop-down
list, and click Next.
#The Enter a Port Name dialog box will appear. Type in the name of the
host and the share name of the printer.
(for example, \\COMPUTER_NAME\PRINTER_SHARE_NAME) and click OK.
#Select Use the following port, select the new port from the list, and click Next.
#From the List of Manufacturers select HP and on the window on the
right scroll down the list
to see if you can see the name " HP Laserjet 1020" and if you can then
click on it and click
Next to complete the installation. If you cannot find the name " HP
Laserjet 1020" in the list
of models then try (experiment !!) HP Laserjet 1000 or some other
model in the 1000 series.

Once you have 'installed the printer' on your laptop as mentioned
above you should be able to
print to the Laserjet from your laptop without having your laptop
physically connected to the
printer ( but not totally wirelessly as you would need to connect the
Laserjet 1020 to a Desktop
or other PC which is on the Wireless Network.)

Good Luck .
SAL

PS : Here's another tip. If you do decide to upgrade to a new Laserjet
with Wireless or Wired network capability Call HP Sales and ask if you
would be eligible for the "Trade-In" program whereby HP allows you
(sometimes) to trade-in your old Laserjet for a new one and you get a
sizable discount on the price of the new Laserjet.
