Hello Rossbj,

Quote the U.S. Department of Labor - Bureau of Labor Statistics
Computer Software Engineers
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos267.htm

"Computer software engineers held about 697,000 jobs in 2000. About
380,000 were computer software engineers, applications, and about
317,000 were computer software engineers, systems software."

Following is the relevant part concerning databases:
"Although they are employed in most industries, the largest
concentration of computer software engineers, almost 46 percent, is in
the computer and data processing services industry."

This industry is defined as including "firms that develop and produce
prepackaged software and firms that provide contractual computer
services such as computer programming, systems integration, and
information retrieval, including online databases and Internet
services."

The Bureau of Labor Statistics also reveals there are 106,000 Database
administrators in 2002. [1]
And also:
"Employment in computer and data processing services grew by more than
1.3 million jobs from 1990 to 2000. In 2000, there were about 2.1
million wage and salary jobs, and an additional 164,000 self-employed
workers, making the industry one of the largest in the economy." [2]

The following table reveals the specific numbers for each sector:

2000 National Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates
Computer and Mathematical Occupations
http://www.bls.gov/oes/2000/oes_15Co.htm

  Computer Programmers: 530,730
  Computer Software Engineers, Applications: 374,640
Computer Software Engineers, Systems Software: 264,610
  Database Administrators: 108,000

For more information on how above terms are defined, please see:

I hope this helps!

George Boole....father of boolean algebra....is instrumental in
creating the database profession. operators: "and","not","or"...in
early symbolic logic, helped lay the foundation of database design.

An intresting piece of triva is:

George Boole married into the Everest family (Mount Everest)
