Hi foster124 In the first 12 months there were only 2 1st Roger Bannister 6th May 1954 3:59.4 and 2nd John Landy 21st Jun 1954 3:58.0 then 3rd, 4th & 5th in one race "Before 28 May 1955 only two men (Roger Bannister and John Landy) had run a mile in less than four minutes. On that date however, at the British Games meeting in London three more men added their names to this list when Laszlo Tabori (Hungary) won in 3min 59.0sec from Chris Chataway (Great Britain) and Hewson (3min 59.8sec) third. http://www.sporting-heroes.net/athletics-heroes/displayhero.asp?HeroID=294 6th Jim Bailey 5th May 1956 3:58.6 just scrapes into the 24 months then just outside 7th Ronald Delaney 1st June 1956 3:59.0 "Within two years on 1 June 1956 Ireland had its first member of the sub-four club. Ronnie Delaney, a student at the famous Villanova University in Pennsylvania, had finished his examinations and was keen for a race. [...]The time of 3:59.0 made Delaney the seventh man under four! 8th Gunnar Nielsen 2nd June 1956 3:59.1 9th Derek Ibbotson 4th August 1956 3:59.4 "On 4 August 1956, he became the 9th man in history to run a sub 4-minute mile when he won the Emsley Carr mile at London in 3min 59.4sec." http://www.sporting-heroes.net/athletics-heroes/displayhero.asp?HeroID=306 those without specific statements for order I was able to assign with some cross-checking from their best performances in the 1 Mile all time performance list @ http://web.telia.com/~u19603668/atb-m07.htm |

Hello Cynthia I believe I started off with 'Bannister' and 'Landy' and sub OR break four minute mile and then added relevant ordinals like first, second, third, etc which I think first led me to Chataway as the second Brit which, when I went checking for details, gave me Tabori and Hewson. Bailey I think turned up similarly as the first to break it in the US. I then proceeded to use combinations of names, which didn't reveal a simple list of first n to break four minutes but did lead to the BIG list which enabled me to work out the others. |

Thanks! That makes sense. Sometimes even "I" forget to "search for the answer," --not the question. |
