I am looking for a list of hiking clubs in USA and Canada.  A hiking
club is a group of people who get together and go hiking (it is not a
hiking equipment company or a company that takes people on guided
hikes).  Clubs will have things like a president, members, meetings,
outings, etc.  The list should include the name of the club, the
state/province, website address, president's name (or other key
contact person), contact person's email address (or other email
address provided for the club), and the mailing address of the club. 
I would throw in extra $ if you could also provide the number of
members for each club (this is usually listed on their website).

I have a list of more than 300 hiking clubs in the US, and could
readily expand this to included Canada as well.


However, the list has the name of the club, the URL and the state, but
it does not include contact names, or other contact information such
as a mailing address or email address.


It would require a large, labor-intensive effort to add such
information to the list...more than can be justified for this
question, even with the generous amount you've offered for an answer.


Would a list of US and Canadian hiking clubs -- formatted as I
described above -- meet your needs?


Let me know your thoughts on this.

I really need contact info.  I wasn't sure how the researching system
worked and thought it wouldn't be too difficult to add this on.  On
another note, though, just to be sure we're on the same page, are you
certain that the clubs you have are actual clubs as opposed to
companies specializing in hiking? I just wanted to be sure we are

Well, I've done a lot of investigation for you and found many, many
organizations that I feel should meet your criteria. I reviewed dozens
of listings pages for hiking clubs, including:

As you suspected, all of these lists contained lots of entries that
did NOT meet your needs. Here's the main processes I used to wade
through the potential organizations:

* If the organization was focused on mountaineering, water sports, and
other non-hiking activities, I excluded it - UNLESS there was a
substantial hiking component involved as well.

* If the organization stepped over the line of hiking club to become
more of a hiking outfitter - i.e., more professional - I excluded it.

* If the organization was focused on hiking, but was primarily
involved in trail creation  and maintenance, or advocacy - and didn't
have a substantial group hiking component - I excluded it.

* If the organization was supposed to have a website, but I couldn't
find one (either through the listing or through a Google search) - I
excluded it.

* Sometimes, when things were "close" I had to make judgment calls. 


All in all, I have listed 178 verified clubs, sorted by
state/province. I acknowledge that there are likely many more in the
U.S. and Canada that I was unable to find in a reasonable amount of
time. However, these additional clubs would be progressively more and
more difficult to ferret out. IF you go through these 178 and find you
want more, I would suggest creating another question (for me
specifically, or for another researcher if you prefer) that refers to
these results as a baseline.


I surfed/searched through each individual club's website to try to
find you all the information you specified. However, as you can
imagine, I wasn't always able to find each piece of data requested.
The following fields are listed for each club below (sometimes being
empty, of course):

* Name - name of the organization.

* Website - homepage for the organization's website.

* Contact Name - the "highest" executive member whose name I could
find. Sometimes it is just ANY name that I could find.

* Email - email address for the Contact Name, if possible. Otherwise,
a general email address for the organization.

* # Members - the approximate number of current members of the
organization, if listed on the website.

* Mailing Address - the "snail mail" address of the organization.
Sometimes I've included just a phone number if that's all that was
provided.


I hope this information meets your needs. If you need clarification,

I know there is a vast number of hiking clubs in the US and Canada. 
Although 178 is a large number, to reach an exceptional rating, I
would have hoped for a list more in the 300 club range.  But this list
was thorough and very helpful.  Thank you!
