Hello blucken:

Thanks for the interesting question. Before I get too deep into number
crunching for you, I'd like you to look at some of the base data I've
found to see whether it is satisfactory to you.

First thing I found is a document listing worldwide oilseed Areas,
Yields, and Production:

Circular Series - WAP 02-06 - February 2006
World Oilseeds by Commodity - Table 10
URL: http://www.fas.usda.gov/wap/circular/2006/06-02/Oils.pdf

This has tables for all of your specified crops except jatropha.

The next thing I found is a table listing the prices per metric ton of
these same oilseeds:

Table 20. - Oilseed Prices - (U.S. Dollars Per Metric Ton)
URL: http://www.fas.usda.gov/oilseeds/circular/2006/06-01/PRICES.pdf

Now, if this data fits what you are looking for, I can massage these
figures into the geographic areas you have specified. Some things I'll
need to know from you:

* Is the lack of figures for jatropha a major issue? I fear that since
this is a newer and smaller crop, finding accurate data may be
difficult/impossible.

* When calculating the value of the crop, is it acceptable to use the
average prices listed in Table 20? Figuring crop value is tricky since
some of it is sold in the country where it is grown (for one price)
while the remaining amount is exported at different prices.

* Which time frame are you most interested in? 2004/2005? Or perhaps
the estimates for 2006? I would suggest going with 2004/2005 since
this is the most recent, reliable data.

Please let me know what you think before I proceed with your question.

Thanks!

If you exclude jatropha, that would be fine. I agree this one is small
and little data exists. GO with the approach you have suggested.

Thanks - looking forward to the data

Hello blucken:

Thanks for the clarification and for your understanding and patience.

All figures below are for the 2004/2005 season, as defined by the
Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA):

United States Department of Agriculture - Foreign Agricultural Service
URL: http://www.fas.usda.gov/

The figures below were compiled from data on the following pages. Some
of the calculations were complicated, but I believe they are all well
grounded.

Circular Series - WAP 02-06 - February 2006
World Oilseeds by Commodity - Table 10

The first set of tables I've compiled is for total hectares planted
for the various crops you requested.

Soy Planted
(in millions of hectares)
*************************************
North America 31.10

Europe 1.26

Asia 18.24

South America 40.53

Rest of World 1.35

Rapeseed (Canola) Planted
(in millions of hectares)
*************************************
North America 5.28

Europe 4.75

Asia 14.75

Total Oilseeds Planted
(in millions of hectares)
*************************************
North America 42.98

Europe 17.83

Asia 72.00

South America 44.89

Rest of World 19.95

Notes:

* I've included Turkey as part of Asia
* I've included Russia as part of Europe

The next set of tables contains the estimated value per hectare of
these crops (both oil and meal) in the specified areas. Yield is in
metric tons, price per metric ton (in USD) is listed in the title, and
value per hectare is in USD. (I decided to stick to the hectare unit.
If you want the value per acre, just divide the value per hectare by a
factor of 2.4711)

Soy (Oil) Crop Value (Price - $217 per metric ton)
                   Yield Value (both per hectare)
******************************************

North America 2.83 $614

Europe 1.64 $356

Asia 1.35 $293

South America 2.43 $527

Rest of World 1.47 $319

Soy (Meal) Crop Value (Price - $202 per metric ton)
                   Yield Value (both per hectare)
******************************************

North America 2.83 $572

Europe 1.64 $331

Asia 1.35 $273

South America 2.43 $465

Rest of World 1.47 $469

Rapeseed (Oil) Crop Value (Price - $262 per metric ton)
                   Yield Value (both per hectare)
******************************************

North America 1.58 $414

Europe 3.28 $859

Asia 1.36 $356

South America n/a n/a

Rest of World 1.13 $296

Rapeseed (Meal) Crop Value (Price - $131 per metric ton)
                   Yield Value (both per hectare)
******************************************

North America 1.58 $207

Europe 3.28 $430

Asia 1.36 $178

South America n/a n/a

Rest of World 1.13 $148

Palm Kernel & Palm Oil (Oil) Crop Value (Price - $392 per metric ton)
******************************************
We don't have figures for yield in individual areas, so, assuming a
total of 8 million hectares planted worldwide, and knowing a total
production of 42.53 million metric tons, the average yield is:

5.31 tons/hectare

At the given price per metric ton, the value per hectare is:

$2080/hectare

Notes:
* The available yield data was not broken down by oil and meal, so I
am assuming equal yields for both.

I've found the following relevant information about jatropha
yields/production as well:

Jatropha curcas L. - Yields and Economics
URL: http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/duke_energy/Jatropha_curcas.html#Yields%20and%20Economics
Quote: "According to Gaydou et al (1982), seed yields approach 6?8
MT/ha with ca 37% oil. They calculate that such yields could produce
the equivalent of 2,100?2,800 liters fuel oil/ha (see table under
Energy). In Madagascar, they have ca 10,000 ha of purging nut, each
producing ca 24 hl oil/ha for a potential production of 240,000 hl
(Gaydou, et al, 1982)."

Jatropha in Africa
URL: http://www.ecoworld.org/Home/Articles2.cfm?TID=367
Quote: "Referring to the table, the yield per hectare per year is up
to 8.0 tons of Jatropha seed, which contain over 30% oil. At $320
(US$) per ton, this will translate into sales of Jatropha crude oil of
$768 per hectare per year. Of potentially equal or greater value is
the yield from Jatropha seeds of glycerin. Up to 7% of Jatropha seeds
are made up of glycerin, which sells for up to $2,000 per ton. This
translates into glycerin sales of up to $1,120 per year per hectare,
or total sales of up to $1,888 per year per hectare."

Please let me know if you need any clarification of the information
I've provided above.

Search Strategy (on Google):
* soy crop estimates
* soy crop estimates "south america" "europe"
* copra palm hectares worldwide
* rapeseed
* acres in a hectare

Thanks.

Great information but one question. Are the yields for soy, rapeseed,
and sunflower the tons of seeds/hectare or the tons of oil/hectare?
If it's tons of seeds, then the value should be multiplied by the oil
content of each seed.
