OK. Six months ago I bought a winter coat at a vintage (used) clothing
store. I brought the coat home and hung it in the closet to await cold
weather. I took the coat out this morning to wear it, and realized it
still has its plastic security tag on it! How do I remove the tag????
Help! (The store is a couple of hours' drive away from here, and I no
longer have the receipt for the coat, so I can't prove that I paid for
it, although I did!)

Thanks.

Hi Nightowl44!

Please try this and let me know if it works.

?If it's one of those long with ones.....
I took a pair of ViseGrips to it till it came apart then the rest was
easy to get off. There is a little metal piece inside that grips a
metal post you just have to get that off after the casing. Should
don't any damage other than the whole from the unit.?

I'm a tad confused....

If the tag was still on the coat, wouldn't the store's alarms have
gone off when you left with it? Thats the purpose of the tags....

Also, be verrrrry careful removing the tag. Some of them are known to
*explode* as they are filled with some kind of dye that can spray all
over.

I heard that a magnet will work. It's got to be a strong magnet.

steph53.

the alarm would sound if the tag was:

1) activated (some apparently need to be 'told' to work)
2) was real.
3) the device at the door that should go 'bleep bleep' is real.

there is always a cost/benefit ratio that businesses look at when
using tags on merchandise to prevent theft. sometimes the benefit
from people "believing" there have been security measures taken to
prevent theft curtails it enough to make "live equipment" to costly.

wow. the blow off security class i took in undergrad just paid off.
i honestly never thought i would need that information...

I'll give the ViseGrip method a try this weekend.

Thanks for the warning about the dye. It's one of those long white
plastic security tags, so hopefully it isn't dye-filled.

Thanks everybody!

Twice I've had this problem when I bought clothes at a resale store.

Both times, I was able to remove the tag by snipping the central metal
post with wirecutters from my husband's toolbox. There was no dye in
the thingies, thank goodness.

Hi Nightowl,

Great handle by the way!

Second-hand clothing stores could ill afford such a system. Sounds
like the item may have been stolen from a retailer and hocked at the
second-hand trader, probably along with other bundled goods. The
dealer most likely was unaware of the tag. I presume you have already
'phoned the dealer, regardless of your lost receipt.

Are there any identifying marks on the tag or coat which suggest a
retailer? Did the used dealer have obvious walk through detectors by
the door?

As your coat is white, be prepared for the worst if you attempt direct
rectification. A bit more patience in searching might pay off later.
Then again, if you prefer a black coat, you could always dye it I
suppose.
