How many piano students (i.e. people who currently have piano lessons
one time) are there in the USA? A current statistic or one from recent
years will do. Preferably from a reliable source, e.g. a survey by a
recognised government or music or educational organisation.

(If you can't find this, then closely-related statistics, e.g.
percentage of Americans who have learned the piano, number of
Americans who play the piano (but who may not currently be having
lessons), number of US piano teachers, etc. *may* suffice if this will
help me estimate the number of piano students.)

Sorry, mistyped the first sentence - the brackets should read: '(i.e.
people who have piano lessons at any one time)'

Hello Soothing,

I can provide you with the estimated number of Americans that play the
piano. This figure is taken from a May 2000 Music Teachers Association
Newsletter.

A Warner Brothers publication (no date) also provides the number of
Americans that play the piano.

The Blue Book of Pianos provides the number of amateur pianists and
the number of children taking piano lessons in this country,

I also found the number of piano teachers and the number of piano
students in a Music Trade Magazine from 1992.

Would my findings be useful for you?

Thanks,
Bobbie7

Hi Bobbie

Yes, these figures would suit me fine. (As I can cross-check them
against each other for sanity.)

Thanks

Hello Soothing,

Thank you for your clarification.

The results of my research are as follows:

According to the Wisconsin Music Teachers Association Newsletter from
May 2000, an estimated 20 million Americans play the piano.

Relevant Excerpt:

?Of the new pianos sold in the United States last year, 32,000 were
grands, 60,000 were uprights and 86,000 were digital, for a total
value of $830 million. An estimated 20 million Americans play the
piano.?

According to the following Warner Brothers publication some 20 million
Americans play the piano.

Relevant Excerpt:

?Today, although those numbers aren?t nearly as high, there are some
20 million Americans who play the piano. In fact, according to the
National Piano Foundation, adults between the ages of 25 and 55
represent the fastest-growing group of aspiring pianists. Since recent
research has strongly indicated that the study of music, especially
playing an instrument, can enhance a child?s ability to learn, many
parents are enrolling their children in music classes.?

From the Blue Book of Pianos:
www.bluebookofpianos

?For the more than 23 million amateur pianists and the six million
children now taking piano lessons in this country, you can choose a
piano of reasonably lower cost and still get an instrument of
excellent quality which you can learn to play and enjoy, and which you
can afford.?

Hal Leonard's new "More for your Music." (Hal Leonard Publishing
Corp.'s musical publications)
Music Trades; May 01, 1992;

40- 50,000 piano teachers
Over one million piano students

?Although there are an estimated 40- 50,000 piano teachers and over
one million piano students today, reaching them is much like finding a
proverbial needle in the haystack. Piano teachers are generally
independent and, more importantly, set in their ways about what they
use in their lesson plans.?

I hope this helps!
