What size is your dog? Is he long-haired or short-haired? Doe she
have standing ears or floppy ears? A more specific description of
your dog would help.

Jester,

It might be helpful if you could post a link to a picture of your
pooch. Your description as it is fits at least half a dozen dogs of
my acquaintance, and they're all different breeds.

Dear Jester,

A strong yet unrelated recommendation - take this dog to a vet. Except
telling you about the breed of the dog, they can check if this dog is
not sick, if it had been vaccinated, and what his or her age is.
They'll also recommend to you how to take the best care of your new
pet (congrats, by the way!).

If I had to venture a guess from a distance, it would most likely be a
Golden Retriever.

American Kennel Club,

Google search terms: Golden Retriever

Or a border collie mix

A website dedicated to the Show Mad About You.

Google search term :Mad About You (tv show who had a mixed border
collie as a pet)

Perhaps one of these will lead you closer to an answer, and maybe one
of my co-researchers can use this to help you as I will be away this
evening.

If this isn't a breed you recognize, it could be a Vizsla, a Hungarian
pointer. They're fairly rare. I'm just not sure about the white
markings. Always thought they were a solid color.

The other dog that came to mind was a Basenji. Has he/she barked yet?
They also have a distinctive curl to their tail.

"EverythingDoggy.com" has a useful feature called "A to Z of Dog
Breeds," which gives a description and several photos of hundreds of
breeds. Included are many puppy pics, which helps in identifying
younger dogs. Even rare breeds are covered here.

Now I will be much more knowledgeable next time my ankle is chewed by
a Xoloitzcuintle. ;-)

Forgot about those Ibizan Hounds. Yet another possible. Hope we get
to see a photo of your pooch, Jester.

I'm enjoying that site, Pink, thanks! Hope you join us soon. ;-)

without knowing it's size, i would say you might have a Nova Scotia
Duck Tolling Retriever, but they're sort of rare so it might not be.
Search for pics of them and see if they look like your dog.
