Dear paulaelen-ga

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question.

Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzig Norgay, the first men to conquer the
mountain in the 1950?s, came amazingly close when they estimated the
height of Mount Everest at roughly 29,000 ft. (8850 m). The current
height of the mountain (the mountain grows about 2.4 in/6.1cm per
year), as measured by global positioning systems, is actually 29,035
ft ? only 35 feet off from Sir Hillary?s best guess some 50 years ago.
