Thank You for asking.


There are _dozens_ of clubs in both cities.  I selected as examples
clubs geared towards heterosexual participation

in Bondage & Discipline, Dominance & Submission, and Sadism &
Masochism (B&D/D&S/S&M).  I avoided links to clubs

that have affiliations: race, religion, gay and lesbian, etc. Keep in
mind however, that there are probably a couple

affiliation groups you might be interested in, so look them over carefully.

In these Clubs (and at Play Parties in general), there are public
rooms and private rooms, and each Club has it's

own rules and conduct codes, please explore the links for complete
details. As far as what is NOT allowed... Not

much, if you have a CONSENTING partner.  There are literally hundreds
of possible activities, and if something is

deemed inappropriate in a public area, you would be discreetly asked
to move to a private room.

What makes the private, for profit dungeons *legal* is there is
ABSOLUTELY NO SEX.  See The Dominion, below, for an

example...

FOr certain, there are no persons under age 21, and drinking alcohol
in general is not allowed. Some clubs have a

minimum age restriction, usually age 25.  The "LIMITS" list would be
common sense, like No prostitution, No animals,

No Scat (however, watersports are allowed in the large spacious
bathrooms...). Some Edge Play would be too extreme

for a public area, except on "Edge Play Nights"...  TENS units are
common in public areas in the clubs, as are all

forms of Domination and submission, like: bondage, flagellation,
caning, whips, cages, corporal punishment,

humiliation, etc.... 

If you are new to this lifestyle, I would not recommend going to an
Event alone, I would recommend starting out with

a simple "MUNCH," nor would I spend money on any memberships till I
found my niche and made some friends.  Somehow I

don't think this is the case.  If you would like more examples, please

FYI my Google Research Friends:  I am writing a dissertation on
sexuality and human psychology and I am seeking facts, statistics and
figures -- charges, arrests, fines, sentences , etc.   Laws, or lack
of laws.

For instance, on Zooskool.com it says people can marry their pets,
which clearly gets around the "cruelty to animals" -- as the pet is
now your spouse.

Other examples of things I'd be intersted in information are:

1) Something called "Furries" people who have sex with others dressed
as stuffed animals.

2) People whio have sex with dolphins.

The bottomline is, I am interested in any information that would
further my research, specifically facts and statistics, laws (or lack
thereof), arrests, fines and sentences.

One avenue of inquiry you might want to consider is legal advocate
groups that serve the BDSM community.  I know of at least one in SF. 
I can't recall the name of it, but one of the principals goes by the
(scene) name of Dmitri.  I am sure they would be well versed in what
is and isn't legal, what kinds of cases come up, and what kinds of
defenses are made.  I also think some of the private organizations,
such as Odyssey, Fusion, and Janus, have legal arms.  I believe some
of those groups have websites.  And don't overlook the Sisters of
Perpetual Indulgence, who have ties into the leather community.  I am
a big fan of theirs--they are a serious community service
organization, giving special but not exclusive support to the gay
community, despite their wickedly irreverent disguises and spirit of
fun.  Check their website too:

They could probably steer you to legal information.

There's an above-ground club I've heard of called the Power Exchange
in SF.  And there's a well-known dominatrix (whose name I've
forgotten) who gives lessons and holds classes.

I hope these suggestions provide you with some leads.

I also think that in some cases the legalities affecting clubs and
dungeons have to do with insurance rather than with potentially
illegal practices.

(Disclaimer:  My interest is not academic like yours, but it's not
really personal either, so I have incomplete information.  I have a
friend who is really, really into kinky stuff, and I am just about the
only straight friend she talks to about it because I am not bothered
by what other consenting adults do and I don't judge her for her
private activities.)

I think it pretty likely that she would be, and of course she has lots
of contacts in the scene.  (She is a TA in a graduate-level human
sexuality class herself and lined up several of her kinky friends to
do a presentation to the class!  I sat in just to listen, and it was
fascinating--not just the presenters but the reactions of the class
members, some of whom were so vehemently negative that you have to
wonder how they are ever going to help any non-vanilla people in a
counseling role.  Others were very open-minded, even if it was all new
to them, and I hope that's the sort of person that my friend or
relative might find if they had relationship problems within an
unconventional relationship--where the unconventionality itself is
*not* the problem that needs solving.)  However, I can't post contact
information for myself or for her here, and neither can you.  It's
against the rules.  So the point is moot.

You might do best to visit a club yourself in whatever city you're in
and win the trust of participants who can introduce you to others. 
It's a rather closely protected world, and you have to find people who
can vouch for you.

April,  --There are also international "secret society" clubs of this
genre.  These ultra-secret clubs cater to high society, government
officials, and celebrities.  The names are not-so-secret (they can be
discovered), however, gaining access to a member list, or an event, is
another matter, it would  take a LOT of money, a court order, or a
recognizable name or face.  These exclusive black tie and gown events
are held at exquisite exotic locations, have high-tech security, are

Thanks, Cynthia.  Of course you are right.  However, I can't do that
(or even direct my friend here) without compromising my own online
