I am considering purchasing a local newspaper and adding some services
to assis the advertisers in advertising online. I am interested in
learning more about the market of advertising media and services that
support local advertisers. In this context, "local advertisers" are
companies that are targeting customers within their geographic
region... things like plumbers, attorneys, restaurants, real estate
agents and so forth. Here are my questions :

1. Where would I find industry information (size, players, breakdowns)
on services and media sold for local advertising ?

2. Where would I find information on the sub-markets, such as
community newspapers, that will educate me about the makret trends
(size, technology, changes in market dynamics, etc.). I am looking
for things like research reports, industry groups, etc.

The objective of this question is to provide me with a list of places
to go that I fill find information to become educated on this
marketplace.

I would try the following resources. I looked for local media
resources at American Marketing Association:

Here is how they execute local media buying:

And Nielsen's estimates of local marketing
densities:http://www.nielsenmedia.com/DMAs.html

Here is a study of the California market, by city:

And MarketResearch.com has a lot of reports that would work (they cost
money though)
