Hi,

Could you perhaps tell us what countries you are targeting? Would you
like to have worldwide information or a more limited search?

Regards,

Fons

This was a great question. I know ultimately I will want both
international and US, but for right now I am interested in US based
publicly traded companies. You might see about the companies,
worldwide because I know I will want it also.
Thanks--I look forward to your answer.

Can you clarify your question? Do you specifically want just the list
of stocks which have never had a down day in their market price since
July 1, 2000? If so, can that be based on closing prices? Or do you
need to know which stocks, if any, have never traded down at any time
during the period, even during a single day?

Or, do you simply want a list of stocks which currently trade at the
same or higher price today that they did at closing on July 1, 2000?

These are two very different questions.

Of course you are not under any obligation to say what you want the
information for, if we knew how you wanted to use the list it might be
helpful in determining exactly what data you are interested in.

You are giving me good feedback. I am really looking for those stocks
or companies that generally trade on the one of the three major stock
exchanges in New York(NYSE; AMEX; NASDAQ). I am not interested in
those that seldom trade or penny stocks or mutual funds. The company
stock could have dropped during the time period, but is now at or
above its July 1, 2002 price. I am trying to id companies that could
be solicited for charitable contributions when many of the prominent
companies are having trouble with stock price. I am looking for a
list --maybe you could give me the top 100 who qualify with Sales of
$50 million or more. Thank you for your diligence in this question.

Yes, youcan use closing price.

Here's the bottom line, would you like a list of companies with a
market cap over $1 billion which have a 3-year annualized rate of
return over 20% and also have a 1-year annualized rate of return
greater than zero?

There are 91 of them but I don't think you will be getting what you
really want based on your stated purpose. The price of the stock is
not always a good indication of the financial strength of a company.
For example, Microsoft has about $50B in cash right now, but the stock
price is quite low and it is therefore not on that list although I
believe having a $50B surplus is a good indication that they are doing
relatively well. The same goes for other very well off companies such
as GE, while a higher stock price may not have any value in
determining the financial position of the company which is what you
seem to need.

Clarification of Question by frostysback-ga on 04 Aug 2002 11:03 PDT
I am focusing on companies that are traded on the exchanges I listed
before. My suggestion of size of company was only to narrow the
search. I am fully aware that a company could be doing very poorly,
but the stocks high and vice versa. Maybe we go back to the orginal
question of all stocks from the three exchanges that today trade at or
above the closing value as of July 1, 2000. I am looking for a list
of stock that I can trace back to a company.
Thanks

To Siliconsamurai-ga Thanks for your work. Could you provide us the
list of the 91 companies and if you could tell me where I could find
the list of 700.
Thanks

I would take any time period over the past three years would be
helpful. Are there natural time periods that I should be asking about
1 year and 3 year -- any beginning time or ending time? Could you
direct me to a data base that could provide me this? Thanks again

Hello:
Hello frostysback

I can give you a list of 746 publicly traded stocks that meet a double
test:
They are worth more today than they were 1 year ago, and they are
worth more today than they were 3 years ago, on a total return basis
(that is, stock price and dividends).

Please let me know if this will constitute an acceptable answer.

Hello again Frostysback

You addressed your latest Question Clarification to adamx-ga, but
adamx-ga is not a Google Researcher.

Does this mean that you do not want any of the Google Researchers to
consider your question? If so, you may wish to cancel your question.

I am prepared to answer your question based on 1-year and 3-year
performance as described in my earlier Request for Clarification. If
this question is still active Saturday morning EST, I will post my
answer for you.

Sincerely,
richard-ga

On second thought, since I cannot provide the company list tied
specifically to the July 1, 2000 date that you requested, I will move
on....

Perhaps another Researcher or for that matter someone in a comment
will provide you with the information you need.

Good luck in your search.

Sincerely
richard-ga

Frostysback:

I appreciate your giving me the opportunity to answer your question
with the information that I was able to obtain.

Here's the list of 749 publicly traded companies, sorted by the
highest annual rate of return that the companies obtained over the
three years ending August 16, 2002 (the rightmost column). To make
the list, a company had to show a greater-than-zero total return at
the one-year mark (Aug 16 2001 to Aug 16 2002) and also at the
three-year mark (Aug 16 1999 to Aug 16, 2002). Note that the three
year return is an annual rate, so our 6 leaders, at 100% or better,
made a better than 8-fold return to people who bought their stock on
August 16, 1999 (because they doubledmore than three times in three
years].

I'm sorry my columns didn't line up vertically. They looked good on
my screen until I submitted them.

If you have Excel and want to be able to view or manipulate the data
yourself, please let me know. I believe there is a friend-of-Google
site to which I may be able to upload my Excel spreadsheet.

If you simply want the names of all stocks which are up since July 1,
2000, that may be a very large listing.

There are 2369 publicly traded stocks on U.S. markets (including
ADRs), out of a database of 7000 stocks which show no loss for the
past year, that is, they haven’t gone down.

1288 of the Russell 3000 stocks are not below their prices of three
years ago.

Numbers not adding up, here. Russell 5000, broadly based publicly
traded companies, more than 6500. Penny stocks, don't have the exact
figure, but there are a ton of BBOTC (NASDAQ) out there that were not
on the list. As for the penny stocks that went up since 7/1/00,
probably a very short list, stockzguy is not screening for penny
stocks, he is trying to find industrial strength epoxy to repair the
holes in his portfolio. Please NO expoxy links, thankz.

Yes, the list of 91 was just those exchanges you specified and I had
narrowed the criteria to the largest companies with the best
improvement based on your statement that the top 100 might be a good
list. Restricting it to sales over $50 million still left nearly 700
companies which were up for both 3 years and 1 year.

That sort of information is easy to locate but calculations on the
universe of stocks you specify between two specific arbitrary dates is
extremely difficult and requires access to an expensive database which
I don't have available.

I'm certain another researcher will tackle this but the only database
I know about which could be used to provide the information based on
that precise July 1, 2000 date costs nearly $500 so I won't be able to
help.

Good luck and thank you for your patience.

Finding this data is difficult. I need to find the closing prices for
all stocks on July 1, 2000. Then I need to find the closing prices for
all of the same stocks on August 5, 2002. If I can obtain that data in
a nice computer-accessible format, I could write a program to extract
which stocks went up and which down. But right now finding the data is
hard.

You need to check out the Yahoo stock screener:
http://screen.yahoo.com/stocks.html

What you're asking (approximately) requires that you set the one-year
stock performace to "Up more than 0%." You can further trim down the
list by adjusting the market capitalization, revenue, and earnings
ranges, to name just a few.

For a relatively manageable list (154 as of tonight), set one-year
performance to up 25%, and revenue minimum to $1 billion.

You'll get a shorter list (15) if you keep the 25% performance but
restrict market cap to at least $10 billion. This is the list:

Symbol.Company. Market Cap. Return %. Sales.
IRE Bank of Ireland 12.21B 34.99 $3.99B

BSX Boston Scientific Corp 11.36B 48.06 $2.73B

BTI British American Tobacco PLC 24.27B 37.05 $38.76B

CEO CNOOC Ltd 11.52B 38.86 $2.52B

HSY Hershey Foods Corp 10.31B 25.09 $4.56B

LMT Lockheed Martin Corp 29.00B 62.63 $25.81B

NOC Northrop Grumman Corp 13.03B 46.88 $16.39B

NVS Novartis AG 111.00B 27.00 $22.00B

PG Procter & Gamble Co, The 120.72B 28.69B

RTN Raytheon Co 13.85B 29.98 $17.00B

SRA Serono SA 25.41B 26.24 $1.41B

SO Southern Company Inc 20.53B 26.26 $10.17B

THC Tenet Healthcare Corp 23.28B 29.27 $13.91B

UNH UnitedHealth Group Inc 27.31B 37.62 $24.05B

WLP Wellpoint Health Networks Inc 10.90B 44.61 $14.91B
