Hi nautico, Of George W. Bush's 229 judicial nominees, 219 were approved and only 10 blocked. This is the highest number of first-term nominations approved in more than twenty years. From the Washington Post: Senate Democrats Want To Retain the Right to Block Judicial Nominees By Helen Dewar and Mike Allen Washington Post Staff Writers Monday, December 13, 2004; Page A01 "...Republicans say that Democrats have abused the filibuster by blocking 10 of the president's 229 judicial nominees in his first term -- although confirmation of Bush nominees exceeds in most cases the first-term experience of presidents dating to Ronald Reagan." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A59877-2004Dec12.html The above article is referenced on numerous websites. You can locate these sites by searching "10 of the president's 229 judicial nominees". Search criteria: approved "judicial nominations" "number of" George W Bush approved "160..250 judicial nominees" "number of" George W Bush "220..250 judicial nominees OR nominations" George W Bush I hope this is helpful. This answer was wrong. It was "derived" using the wrong numbers. As of March 31, according to Pat Leahy's office, 204 nominees had been confirmed, none yet in this congress (they were about to). http://leahy.senate.gov/press/200504/041105b.html And according to the Wash Post story above, Bush had made 229 nominations. Do the math. 229-204 = 25 failed nominations, about 10%. When people say only 10 were blocked, they are talking ONLY about nominees that made it out of committee and were scheduled for a vote. The others were blocked by holds by senators, or by rejection during the time the democrats controlled the judiciary committee, or by the democrats not scheduling a vote when they controlled the senate. |
