?While we are making some strides in the prevention of ERCP-induced
pancreatitis, there is no magic bullet (or stent) as of yet. Treatment
of pancreatitis after ERCP is for the most part unchanged from that of
acute pancreatitis of other causes. Considering that an estimated
500,000 ERCPs are performed annually in the United States resulting in
roughly 25,000 cases of iatrogenic pancreatitis, continued work on
pharmacologic agents and endoscopic drainage techniques to prevent
ERCP-induced pancreatitis is warranted. At present careful patient
selection, careful attention to technique, and referral of high-risk
patients to expert centers may be the most useful measures for
preventing pancreatitis after ERCP.?
