Zaphnaphpeneaa ?

Most newspapers started making their content available via the
Internet only after 1995 ? and most charge a fee for looking at the
archives. Indeed, the 2 Salt Lake City newspapers offer search only
back to 1998 (Tribune) and 1988 (Deseret News):

Salt Lake Tribune
?Archive Search?
http://www.sltrib.com/search?reset=true

Deseret News
?Archive?
http://www.desnews.com/cgi-bin/archive

A few select newspapers do go further back, though usually in a
fee-based search. One of the most popular is the New York Times,
indexed back to 1851 by Proquest Historical Newspapers. It?s often
available at no charge at public libraries ? as it is from mine ? and
we can even view it from home.

Here are some of the highlights:
?	It indeed was a Sunday and the NY Times was 187 pages that day. The
headline was:
?Roosevelt Asks Dictators for 10-Year Peace; Orders the U.S. Fleet to
Return to Pacific; Berlin Sees Rejection; Incredible, Says Rome?

?	In a sign that times don?t change, another article reads ?Thousands
in Rush to Pay Income Tax?

But since Sunday?s paper really reflects what happened on Friday or
Saturday, let?s look at Monday, April 17:
?	The reactions to Roosevelt?s peace plan dominate the front pages,
with the lead stories (two of them) under the headline:
?Nazis Fearful of Effect of Roosevelt Plea in Reich; Skillful Reply is Expected?

One story says ?Irreparable Damage Feared if Germans Do Not Act
Cautiously? and the other from Rome reads, ?Italy Appears Indifferent
to Note; Goering and Il Duce Discuss Issue?

But American, South American, French, British and Russian reaction to
Roosevelt?s plan was upbeat.

?	Tornadoes struck Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana on Sunday, killing 30

?	Pan American Airways finished a test of its amphibious aircraft,
Yankee Clipper in a 25-hour round trip across the Atlantic. The test,
with 22 passengers, was the first before the start of the first
trans-Atlantic service by Pan Am.

?	A re-enactment of George Washington leaving Mount Vernon for New
York to be inaugurated drew crowds at the former president?s estate.
Washington left Mount Vernon on April 16, 1789 on horseback and Denya
Wortman did the same trip 150 years later.

?	There was no stock trading over the weekend but the New York Stock
Exchange handled 6.6 million shares the week before and the Dow-Jones
Industrials were at 165. Just for comparison, the Friday Mar. 11,
2005 close for the DJIA was 10,774 and the volume for the DAY was
1.45 billion shares.

?	Federal Reserve rates were 1.5%.

?	The British pound was $4.68; the Canadian dollar $0.9946 and there
were 27.27 Yen to the dollar.

?	The final games of Spring Training were played the day that you were
born. The baseball season opened two weeks later in 1939 than it does
today ? with President Roosevelt throwing out the first pitch at a
Yankees game against the Washington Senators on Monday, April 17.

?	Boston won the Stanley Cup in 5 games over the Toronto Maple Leafs,
winning on Sunday, 3-1.

?	LaSalle motor cars, sold in New York by Cadillac dealers, were priced at $1,240.

?	Salt Lake City weather was sunny the day that you were born (a good
omen). The high was 54 and the low 38.

Google search strategy:
use search of NY Times via Proquest

April 16, 1939

Boston Bruins took the Stanley Cup 4-1 against the Montreal Mapleleafs

Dusty Springfield was born (and just lots and lots of other people
were born and others died)

?The Grapes of Wrath? was reviewed in the NY Herald Tribune and also the NY Times

Vittorio Emanuele III , king of Italy was proclaimed King of Albania
(?cause Albania surrendered)

Certainly lots of other things happened, but probably not world history.
The "Salt Lake City Telegram" might be able to help for local events.
That search got a strange line that Harry Lauder (a Scots vaudville
singer and performer) was not allowed to sing in the Tabernacle -
which wouldn't really surpirse anyone, more surprising, that it was
even suggested, but that wasn't on 4.16.39. You were born on a
Sunday.

I'm not a researcher, but one may be interesting in proving that
better can be found.
