Hello romieangel-ga,

There is a lot of information available about Anoto. I suggest that
you start with the company?s own Web site. It is unusually
comprehensive and it addresses all of the topics you?ve asked about.
To help you complete the picture, I?ve organized what I found
according to your headings.

My chief finding is that the company doesn?t seem to have a clear
strategy for growing its business. This is also true for the whole
digital/electronic pen industry. It seems to be a technology that
cyclically arouses interest, generates some products, and then fades
away. Anoto is far and away the leading player in this industry. Some
of the others mentioned as competitors three or four years ago seem to
have disappeared.

I trust that the resources I?ve collected for you will help you get a
comprehensive view of Anoto and its place in the marketplace.

Best wishes for your projects.

ANOTO MARKETING STRATEGY
========================

http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/9.04/anoto_pr.html
Issue 9.04 - Apr 2001
The Hot New Medium: Paper
How the oldest interface in the book is redrawing the map of the networked world.

Anoto's business model resides in the ANS - in selling off chunks of
the big map, and tracking every transaction scribbled on digital
paper. If a purchase is made on Mead paper, with a Montblanc pen, and
the product or service is delivered to the customer by an online
merchant, then Mead, Montblanc, the merchant, and Anoto each get a
cut. Anoto is betting that it will be able to tap into revenue streams
created by a breed of paper-based ecommerce services that hasn't even
been imagined yet.

Such streams, however, can only run in courses laid by a widely
accepted standard. In that sense, Anoto is a thoroughly 21st-century
business: It's not about making widgets and shipping them to the
consumer, or about building a brand. It's about advocating a standard,
and then insinuating a new enterprise into the global infrastructure
created by that standard.

***** Although a bit dated, this very long article gives you a
thorough explanation of Anoto background and history that will help
you make sense of current news reports as well.

***Anoto V2.0

The WAVE Report has long held a strong interest in the company Anoto. This
is a small Swedish firm, which spun out from Ericsson, with unique pen
technology. It is based on a special dot pattern printed on paper that
allows the pen to know where it is over a very large area. Thus, the
technology is unique in that it allows for absolute pen tracking. Any
Anoto pen can determine where it is in the Anoto addressable paper space.
There is a critical factor to accomplishing this feat ? the need to go to
an Anoto server to decode the location. Another contribution of Anoto was
to suggest one of the first uses of Bluetooth, which was the means
proposed to link the Anoto pen to a cell phone so that the pen could talk
with the Anoto servers.

Anoto?s history and marketing strategy.

Bluetooth pen's patented patterned paper puzzle
Published Friday 14th March 2003 09:45 GMT
Nokia yesterday gave us a lot more detail about its new Digital Pen,
announced at CeBIT this week. SonyEricsson has been selling its
ChatPen for some time. But in traditional style, it hides it on its
web site.

Rival OTM Technologies launched its VPen this time last year, and
that's a Bluetooth pen with which you can write anywhere.
Interestingly, former Ericsson CEO Sven-Christer Nilsson is on the
board of this Israeli company. Siemens, we discovered, announced a
Bluetooth pen based on OTM technology last year, but that seems to
have gone MIA. And OTM's website doesn't appear to have been updated
since last June.

-------------------------------------------------

http://www.otmtech.com
OTM Technologies developed and patented a breakthrough optical laser
based technology for measuring relative motion in three dimensions.

We are looking for applications that require small size,
high-resolution, contact/non-contact, low power sensors.

The VPen? product is being developed within the VIPData European
consortium (please visit http://www.eu-vipdata.com ).

-------------------------------------------------

http://www.otmtech.com/vpen.asp
What is it?
Designed to address the problem of natural communication in a complex
digital world, the VPen? gives users freedom to express themselves in
the most natural way-with handwritten words and ideas, instructions
and drawings.

VPen? combines two familiar tools, the PC mouse and a regular pen,
into a single digital writing instrument.

-------------------------------------------------

http://3c.nii.org.tw/3c/silicon/internet_appliance/ia_anotopen.html
Anoto Pen Technology

Existing Players-Strength and Weakness
An existing player competing against the Anoto pen is the
accelerometer-based pen. Users write down notes in their regular
handwriting and the movements are stored inside the pen. About 10
pages of notes can be stored locally in the pen before being
transmitted to the computer. Once the pen is hooked up to the computer
using either a Bluetooth radio or a docking station, the handwriting
recognition software translates the handwriting movements into text on
a screen. Unlike other handwriting recognition programs, movements not
shapes are analyzed. No electronic notepad needs to be used together
with the pen. Accelerator pens have competed with Anoto technology.

New Players-Strength and Weakness
A new player against Anoto pens is the light pen. The light pen has a
light sensor in the tip which is pressed directly against the computer
screen, providing 1-to-1 correspondence between the pen location and
the cursor location. Light pens are less popular today, but they still
persist in certain specialized applications and may also be combined
with a barcode reader.

Mar 11 00:00:00 GMT 2002
A new range of digital pens are giving mobile phone users more options
for messaging, and helping to make the world just a bit quieter at the
same time.

Both E-Pen InMotion, Dr. Baron's company, and competitor Digital Ink,
offer pens that work with receivers about the size of a mobile phone.
When the receiver is clipped to a piece of paper, two sensors in the
receiver triangulate the position of the pen as it writes, in ink, on
the page. Digital Ink's pen, called the n-scribe, uses infrared to
track the pen's movements, while InMotion uses ultrasound.

A radically different approach to the digital pen concept is being
pursued by OTM Technologies. Instead of writing on paper, OTM's VPen
uses a laser sensor to gauge its position relative to any surface-a
tabletop, your car's steering wheel, even your knee. Using Bluetooth,
it then sends the information back to your mobile phone, where it
appears as text or graphics.

The other major player in the digital pen market is Anoto. Using a
miniature camera in its tip, the Anoto pen reads dots imprinted on
specialty paper to gauge its position on the page, then uses Bluetooth
to transmit that data back to your phone. The drawback-and it's a big
one-is that the pen only works with paper that's printed for Anoto. On
the other hand, the advantages are equally impressive.

-------------------------------------------------

http://www.casio.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=products.detail&Product=EPEN-USB
E-Pen USB connects directly to your Computer through its USB port.
This allows you to Capture information written on Paper to your
Computer or fill out forms with optional 3rd party software.

With the mobile user in mind, InMotion has created a wireless digital
pen that frees the user from device display size and input
restrictions by allowing them to write on any surface?as large as an
A4 size sheet of paper. The sleek pen weighs just 15 grams and is
about the size of a large Mont Blanc. Users simply install the E-Pen
DigiWrite software on their device; clip a small receiver to any piece
of paper and, via ultrasonic technology, the E-Pen transmits a precise
image of the user?s handwriting to the connected device.

Commercial projects involving Anoto functionality are active now in a
number of countries, and, assuming a significance that is much greater
than we first realised, consumer-products giant Logitech islaunching
its own pen incorporating Anoto functionality. This is a move that has
proven to have had two major effects. First, it has provided a
launch-pad for many otherAnoto partner companies. Many have openly
admitted to us that they have been waiting for Logitech to
launchbefore they initiated their own marketing and sales
campaigns.Second, Logitech?s decision to launch its first pen as a
local services device, interfacing directly and only with a PC? via a
cable, no less ? has forced a re-think in many areas about relying on
remote connectivity as the backbonefor applications. Logitech will
launch other pens, and maybe they will follow the original Anoto
model, but for now there is a new andincremental growth opportunity
for Anoto, for Logitech and the partners that are involved.

The key markets for digital forms are health care, manufacturing,

takes that cost down to about $0.25 per page, according to HP. By
going mobile, the companies hope to make digital forms useful in many
new settings, Chaniot said.

What is Anoto functionality?
Anoto functionality brings together digital communication and
handwriting, putting the power of digital communication into pen and
paper. Anoto functionality involves digital pen technology, digital
paper technology and server technology. But Anoto functionality is not
any one of these technologies; together digital pen, digital paper and
server enable Anoto functionality.

Anoto functionality is driven by an ever-growing list of partners
whose products and services form its framework. Anoto functionality is
what all products and services have in common. This compatibility
allows you to use pen and paper just as you have always done, but now
you are also connected to the digital world.
