Jasdetails ?

The best source for old news (pre-1980) is probably Proquest?s
full-text indexing of the New York Times, which goes back to 1851.
Most other major newspapers only go back to about 1980 and charge for
the archives. The Proquest Historical Newspaper collection is a
fee-based service but is widely available in the U.S. at many public
libraries for no charge.

March 27 was a Thursday and the headlines for the day were:

?Liquor ?Control? Failure, Says Ontario Ex-Premier; Cites Rise in Lawlessness
Testifies at Washington
Drinking and Violation of Law Have Increased, Drury Asserts.?

?Roosevelt Censures the Legislature as ?Do Nothing? Body
Governer, in Radio Address, Declares Present Houses Follow Antiquated
Course? (This, of course, was while Franklin D. Roosevelt was still
governor ? or governer -- of New York and before his run for the
presidency.)

?Snowstorm Rages 44 Hours in Chicago; Wide Area Suffers
Mountainous Drifts Halt the City?s Activities ? 19-Inch Fall Sets a Record

?Stock Leaders Advance 2 to 10 Points in First 5,000,000-Share Day This Year?
(By contrast, last Friday?s NYSE trading was 1.4 billion shares.
Broker loan rates or call rates were 3.5 percent.)

France is Expected to Urge Arbitration Pact by Nations on Sea?
(Briand was the French foreign minister and he had arrived in London
to discuss an arbitration arrangement for disputes, to be handled
under the League of Nations treaties.)

The Sports page headlines concerned the National Hockey League playoffs:
?Chicago Loses Second-Place Playoffs to Canadiens, Who Will Now Face Rangers?

Baseball was still in Spring Training, which wouldn?t end until
mid-April ? unlike today?s schedule, which starts regular season play
at the start of April:
?Giants Overwhelm White Sox By 9-3?
?Yankees Break Camp for Texas Invasion
Play Today at Jacksonville Then Begin Extensive Jaunt to the Westward.?

Leading the financial pages is the following story, a bit ironic
considering that United Airlines is still in Chapter 11 proceedings
today:
?Air Lines Merger Being Negotiated

Many Routes Involved
