My XP windows is going slow. One operation in particular is very slow
and I use it to test the speed. This operation is when you right-mouse
click the START button to get a menu with Explorer on it. On my PC it
can take from 20 secs to 60 secs for that menu to pop up. I have tried
everything - increasing hard drive space (15GB free out of 55GB),
defragmenting hard drive and using a registry optimizer(Advanced
System Optimizer). After all that it can still take 60 secs to get
that menu I mentioned to pop up. On other computers it takes less than
a second! How do I rectify this problem? |

Hi!!
The last provided info shows some clues!! The big suspicious is the
following running file:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\basfipm.exe
This file is associated with several problems, specially in Dell
computers, this is probably a driver conflict, that can be fixed by
going to Broadcom's site and downloading and installing the new
drivers for the card.
Try ending this process and check how your computer works:
Press Ctrl + Alt + Del keys together once, the Task Manager will be
displayed, go to the Processes tab and look for the basfipm.exe (you
can click on the Image Name column header to sort processes
alphabetically), select the basfipm.exe process and click on the "End
Process" button.
For references on the use of the Task Manager see:
"Windows XP Task Manager":
http://www.wown.info/j_helmig/wxptskmg.htm
Now check your computer behaviour.
If your computer now runs normally go to the following pages to update
the driver and check again how it works:
"Broadcom Corporation - Download Drivers":
http://www.broadcom.com/drivers/downloaddrivers.php
Please, let me know if your problem is fixed with this trick or not.
Good luck!!

Hi,
Ended the process basfipm.exe as you said. Tried the usual i.e.
right-mouse clicking START and unfortunately still taking up to a
minute for menu to pop up.

Ok, bad luck with our first attemp. :>(
Try the following:
Start your computer in normal mode and check for the problem is still happening.
Open again the task manager and see in the column CPU which processes
are using the most of it (the biggers numbers) and make a list with
them. This column indicates how much CPU resources are being in use by
a process. This would give us more clues about the origin of your
trouble. Please post the ranking obtained by this way.
A first look to your HijackThis log do not show an infection but
tonight I will perform a deeper analysis of it.
One more thing:
I noticed that there is another process running ralated to Broadcom,
this processes are:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\bcmwltry.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\WLTRYSVC.EXE
Try stopping these processes and the basfipm.exe together and check
for what happens.
I will wait your response for this request to provide you more further
assistance if it is needed.
Regards.

Checked CPU Usage and it was as follows:
System Idle Process CPU 99
taskmgr.exe CPU 1
Not quite sure what you mean by Normal mode. Is that not the way I am
starting usually?
Anyway tried stopping both processes basfipm.exe and bcmwltry.exe and
could not find wltrysvc.exe. Still same problem however.
Sorry!
Will get your next response in the morning.
Thanks

Ok, your computer is clean and no process is using your CPU
improperly, so please let me one more shot before go to bed:
The resident antivirus module sometimes slows the computers by
checking every file and/or process accessed, so please stop your
antivirus or disable it and check again if the problem is solved.
To disable your antivirus I guess you must do a right click on its
icon in the tasks bar (beside the clock in the system tray) and select
the disable option, or see in the help of your antivirus how to do
that.
And yes, normal mode is the way you start usually.
I have my fingers crossed, good luck!!!

Sorry about the delay but didn't get your message until this morning.
You may have noticed I am at European time.
Can't actually test what you requested right now and I will explain
because I think I have discovered a big clue.
When I was having the delay problem it was at my home where I am on
broadband Wi-Fi. Now I am at work where I am connected with a proxy.
Noticed the delay problem does not exist here - even when disconnected
from network i.e. when laptop is on stand alone. I would conclude
therefore that the connection to Wi-Fi has something to do with it.
So I need to know what to do when I am on Wi-Fi to remove this annoying delay.
When I get back home in about 4 or 5 hours I will try disabling antivirus.
Thanks also dreamboat-ga for the useful tip!

I have tested again at home which is a Wi-Fi environment. Immediately
the problem returned. In fact I tried turning off the Wi-Fi and
immediately the problem disappeared. I did this a couple of times and
each time the problem disappeared when the Wi-Fi was switched off.
So how can I avoid this problem in a Wi-Fi environment?
By the way, tried disabling Anti-Virus, unfortunately no luck, problem still there.
Thanks

Well, at least we know where is the problem, may be reinstalling the
software associated and/or the hardware drives helps.
Please before leaving could you give me more detailed info about your
Wi-Fi hardware and software, with that I will research for a solution
for you.
Thank you.

Thanks for the comments.
In response to dmrmv-ga yes I do have three network drives that are
mapped to network resources. These are only available at work and not
at home.
In answer to chidorex-ga I will try disabling Win-XP when I am at home
- possibly this evening. I'll let you know how it goes.

Success!
Thanks philbert-ga. Did as you suggested i.e. created a new user
profile and logged in at home with this profile and there was no delay
when for example right-mouse clicking the START button.
So it seems likely now as you and dmrmv-ga alluded to, my laptop must
have been trying to connect to my work network drives which do not
exist at home. For some reason it only tries to do this when the
wireless transmitter is on.
Thank you!
