Question ID: 508926
WHAT I WANT: LIST OF COMPANIES and TECHNIQUES IN VIDEO SECURITY
I want to assemble a list of companies and secondly research groups
and thirdly papers working in the general area of
video security. The industry is currently dominated either by
?Digital Video Recording? (DVR), typically 8 to 16 channels, or by
?CCTV? (Closed Circuit TV). Companies that make only these products are not
my current interest. I?m specifically interested in companies using
computer vision techniques as, or in, their products. Computer vision
techniques may include tracking people, identifying whether they left
bags or suitcases in public
areas, tracking cars, ships, monitoring traffic, setting alarm
conditions if intruders enter excluded areas, tracking between
multiple cameras, identifying the movement patterns of people (whether
they dwelled near an advertisement or not, determining whether lines
are moving too slowly or whether there are ?too many? people in line
etc), identifying faces, identifying where faces are looking and so
on.

NOTES:
* Lots of camera companies will come up, but I?m interested in
companies that are employing computer vision techniques in software
and/or embedded in hardware.
* Lots of University research groups and technical papers will come
up, keep the URL stated in report format below.
* Not interested in patents -- that's a subject of a different question.

WHERE TO START THE SEARCH:
ICS West is the biggest security tradeshow but it runs the gamut from
deadbolts, smoke guns, pressure sensitive optical fiber to deep IR
thermal cameras. The vendor list is below, you could filter it
looking for some of my suggested keywords below. Vendors at ICS:
http://www.iscwest.com/app/homepage.cfm?appname=180&moduleID=324&LinkID=9174&Date=4/01/2003&campaignid=84&iUserCampaignID=17741393
The home page of ICS West is at:
http://www.iscwest.com/App/homepage.cfm?moduleid=42&appname=180

Personal lists might help, such as:
http://www.cs.ubc.ca/spider/lowe/vision.html

Then it?s back to Google or Clusty or your bag of tricks (any way to
search on companies specifically, sort of a meta-Froogle?) to ferret
out these mostly small/new companies that are employing computer
vision in video security. Make sure to look at Google?s sponsored
links. Obviously, some of these companies will be located in Israel.
Sometimes you can go to venture capital company websites and look for
likely companies in their portfolio of companies.

SOME SUGGESTED SEARCH WORDS:
Security system, Surveillance system, remote surveillance, security
forensics, computer vision surveillance, machine vision surveillance
Wide-area surveillance
Video security, video surveillance, remote video surveillance, video
intrusion, Automatic video surveillance, video tracking, video
analysis, automatic video analysis, video behavior analysis, video
object detection, video theft detection, video monitoring, automatic
video monitoring, video alarms, video steering, pan tilt zoom
steering, video perception, video forensics, computer vision
surveillance, machine vision surveillance.
Camera steering, camera tracking, camera monitoring, automatic camera monitoring
Automatic perception
Image analysis, automatic image analysis, Image recognition, image forensics
Scene analysis, scene detection, automatic scene analysis
Stereo vision, stereo monitoring, stereo security, stereo people tracking
Analysis of depth image, analysis of disparity images
Face detection, face recognition, face tracking.
Object detection, object recognition, object tracking,
People tracking, people finding
Person tracking, person finding
Intruder system, intruder detection, video intrusion,
Left object detection, removed object detection.
Behavior detection, behavior analysis
Access control, access monitoring
Multi-camera, camera grid, tracking in a camera grid
Computer vision, computer vision security, computer vision monitoring
Machine vision, machine vision security, machine vision monitoring
Pool Surveillance

Real-time appended to any of the above

REPORT FORMAT:
Your search should be primarily focused on companies producing
software and/or hardware for video surveillance that makes use of
computer vision/machine vision techniques. Along the way, if links
you investigate end up being papers or university groups ? don?t waste
them, just append as described below

Example search: google: security system video surveillance
Brings up lots of stuff:
? stuff ?
GeoVision Digital CCTV link is really: ?Henry?s CCTV Center? NOT of
interest ? just sells cameras, recording and display.

?Lots of stuff? page 2 of google returns

?VistaScape? at http://www.vistascape.com/home.htm is of interest.
Computer vision outdoor tracking.

?somewhere down the list: Cooperative Research Centre
http://www.cssip.edu.au/research/VSAProject.html shows up. Oops, not
a company, a research group but interesting ? copy into the research
group list.

Report should then be (in order of my priority interests):

COMPANIES
*******************
Name, URL, [notes if any (such as ?looks stale?)]
Name, URL, notes
?

RESEARCH GROUPS
*******************
URL 1
URL 2
?.

TECHNICAL PAPERS
*******************
URL 1
URL 2
?

Notes:
* Comma separated list, each entry on one line.
* Again, focus is on finding companies, but I?m also interested in
relevant research groups and technical papers that may crop up. Just
copy the URL if these crop up.

EXPECTATIONS:
Please provide some early feedback about what you are finding so I can
see how on track it is.
I?d expect several tens of companies, most small, some large. I hope
the list is mostly relevant and not filled with ?misses?.
Depending on how many companies you are finding, a bunch of Research
groups and thirdly papers are also appreciated. That is, if you end
up stuck on ~10 companies rather than ~50-100 we might switch over to
research groups and papers. If it ends up mostly research groups and
papers, I?d expect ~$1 per otherwise several 10s of companies.

Will tip for obvious effort and/or results.

Hello -

If you need any additional or different information, simply post a
clarification request, and I will address your needs. The question is
not finished until you're satisfied. Thank you.

I'd like to point you to 4 sources that are particularly relevant to your query:

1) Biometric Information Directory
   http://www.biometricinfodirectory.com/

Simply click the "Sign-in" button on the left, and you'll be taken to
a test-drive of this database service, which lists dozens of companies in the
Biometrics field (which is particularly relevant to this topic). You can
access the companies' names (only) on the free trial. Select sub-topics such
as "iris", "face," etc. and this will take you to firms employing video
technology. The free trial lists the company names only. For a fee of $200,
you can gain access to the contact information for each company, in addition
to a breakdown of the companies' status as private or public.

2) Security Magazine
   http://www.securitymagazine.com

This magazine publishes a buyer's guide that spans the entire scope of this
industry. You can access the guide online. Click on Buyer's
Guide on the right, then choose a category from one of the pull-down menus.

3) Additional vendors can be found at these two links:

   Find Biometrics
   www.findbiometrics.com
Choose a category on the right, and scroll down to see a list of "additional
   vendors."

A few links to companies in Telemetry here at a personal page
   http://www.tamug.tamu.edu/labb/Links.htm

I've assembled a list of several dozen sites that fall within the
scope of your target description. Many, if not most, of the companies
mentioned work in multiple capacities.

I've had a little time to look this over. It seems the list could be
more extensive and focused more on intelligent video security. That
is, companies employing security cameras to monitor people, vehicles,
and sites like ports, borders, airports etc. I'm not particularly
interested in biometrics which involves identifying individuals
through face recognition, finger prints etc.

In a few minutes, I came up with several to the types of companies
that I am interested in:

http://www.objectvideo.com/
http://www.sarnoff.com/security/
http://www.vistascape.com/home.htm
http://www.ioimage.com/
http://www.safeguardsvideo.com/
http://www.ascom.com/secsol/art/products_and_solutions_art/intelligent_video_surveillance_art.htm
http://www.nice.com/products/video/index.php

Some of these were picked up first in articles when searching for
"intelligent video security".

Could you see if you can make the list more complete focused on visual
detection and tracking? [leave out companies that just sell video
transmission, digital video recording or security camera systems --
there are 100s, I want companies that employ computer vision,
automatic detection, machine intelligence etc.

Thanks

Gary

Not that I care as much about this, but a good summary of vision
companies in general:

Hello -

Thank you for the clarification.

My reasoning for the biometrics component, particularly the "face
recognition" area, was that this technology employs both video and
intelligence to recognize faces.

But I will look further into this today.
