I recently lost my job and am looking for a new one. I am looking at
inovative ways to tap the " untapped job market " There are a number
of streets I know of in a downtown city that have multi-company
executive office towers with 20 - 30 different offices in each " Tower
" I would like to find out the names of these companies, so I can go
to thier websites and see if they list any jobs that are not
advertised on sites like monster. If you just walk in the front door
to look at a directory the doorman will throw you right out on your
head. I have tried search engines like switchboard.com the local phone
company etc. You can do a search under just street name, but they all
have a filter that includes " search within x distance " this gives me
every business within a mile or something. I am not interested in
knowing that Joes deli is located a mile away on another street.
Without having to have each specific address of each location I am
interested in how do I do this ?

dodgercat-ga,

Your plan sounds like a good one, and I wish you luck with it.

There are several ways to zero in on businesses in a given area.

The easiest is probably Google's own "local search" at:

in the "what" box, type in [ office ]

and in the "where" box, put in either:

(a) a zip code of interest, or

(b) a street address (even if invented) of an area you're interested
in -- e.g. 4000 Main Street Anytown, NY

You'll get A LOT of results, but in the upper right hand part of the
results page, you'll have an option of clicking on a "1 mile" link,
that will narrow down the results to right in the neighborhood of
interest.

You'll probably notice a number of offices at the same address, say:

1234 Main Street
Anytown, NY 10099

You can use this to conduct a further search. Just enter the address
WITHOUT the word street (or avenue, etc) in quotes into a regular
Google search (not the local search), along with the zip code. In
other words:

[ "1234 main" 10099 ]

This will return bunches of businesses that operate at this address,
and will often lead you right to the businesses' web site, if they
have one.

If you run into any problems with this search -- or if you need some
other options -- just let me know, and I'm at your service.

And again...good luck.

P.S. Just to make clear, searching on [ office ] should eliminate
most of the results for Joe's Deli, gas stations, dry cleaners, and so
on.

I'm sorry, but this is rather generic. I don't need to pay money and
go through this trouble to just get a " Look it up on google " answer
that I would give my grandmother, don't you think I've tried such
simple methods. Please forward this to another " researcher " I'd like
a more powerful tool than " look it up on google. Not to be rude, but
I'm not an idiot, I could have figured an answer out like that myself.

Thanks anyway

Not to be rude, either, but did you try the specific steps I laid out for you?

If you did, and the results were not satisfactory, please let me know,
and I'll be happy to make amends.

Waiting to hear back from you...

What an innovative way to use Google Local. I tried pafalafa-ga's
suggestion with a large office building I'm familiar with. It's called
Metro Center Tower.

I first searched to find its exact address.
http://www.equityoffice.com/properties_space/building.aspx?buildingId=2439

Then I went to Google Local and entered the street address ("950 Tower
Lane") in the "What" search box and the city address (Foster City Ca
94404) in the "Where" box.

I got a couple of dozen Local hits, most of which were businesses that
are located in the Metro Center Tower. The search results also
continued with "The web pages below contain "950 Tower Lane" and
addresses near Foster City Ca 94404" and gave me several dozen more
companies that are in this large building. It was easy to pick out the
tech companies and the search results most of the time took me
straight to the company Web site.

I'm going to use this suggestion in future searches.
