Question ID: 510426
Where can I find lists of current top authors in a field? Defining top
authors as those who are published in journals and books more often
than others. I need this to compile a bibliography of top authors in
my proposed doctoral field of Organizational Behavior and applied
behavioral fields of psychology, sociology, social psychology,
political science and anthropology.

Kevin,

I don't know of a readily available source that can provide the most
common citations for papers on this topic.

But it is certainly possible to produce a list of the most
frequently-used textbooks in the field, such as:

Organizational Behavior
John R. Schermerhorn, James G. Hunt, Richard N. Osborn

Organizational Behavior
Stephen P. Robbins

Organizational Behavior Reader
David A. Kolb, Irwin M. Rubin

Would a list of about the Top 15 such books meet your needs? If so,
please specify whether there are any fields other than "Organizational
Behavior" that I should focus on in compiling the list.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks pafalafa!

I am aware of these authors and as a college professor I teach using
their texts but I need a list of authors of journals and books (other
than textbooks) whose writing is not older than 2 years (not older
than 2003 publication date)in organizational behavior and psychology
and sociology and social psychology and political science and
anthropology. Textbooks are outdated the day they are published since
their contents are usually a few years old due to the length of time
it takes to write a text.

I am asking for a source of current (published works of books and
journal articles no earlier than 2003) "top authors" (those most
frequently published).
You do not need to provide the list or the publications. Just tell me
where I can get it already compiled in all the aforementioned
disciplines.

k3,

Thanks for the feedback.

Sociological Abstracts returns about 75 journal articles dated 2003 or
later with the descriptor "organizational behavior". Ranking them by
relevance produces a list that begins like this:

Trust as an Organization Principle: Trust Promotion in the Field of
Tension of Personal and Systemic Trust
Schweer, Martin K W, Erwagen Wissen Ethik, 2003, 14, 2, 323-389

Differences in the Response of Women's Voluntary Organizations to
Shifts in Canadian Public Policy
Meinhard, Agnes G; Foster, Mary K, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector
Quarterly, 2003, 32, 3, Sept, 366-396

The Relationship between Perceptions of Corporate Citizenship and
Organizational Commitment
Peterson, Dane K, Business & Society, 2004, 43, 3, Sept, 296-319

Understanding and Developing Leisure Volunteer Work within a
Technological and "Clientelist" World
Thibault, Andre; Fortier, Julie, Loisir et Societe/Society and
Leisure, 2003, 26, 2, fall, 315-344

Social License and Environmental Protection: Why Businesses Go beyond Compliance
Gunninghanm, Neil; Kagan, Robert A; Thornton, Dorothy, Law & Social
Inquiry, 2004, 29, 2, spring, 307-341

Does that look like the sort of thing that would meet your
needs...it's not an out-and-out count of citations, but I'm not aware
of a source that will do that in the context of this particular field.

in organizational behavior and sociology. If you know of other such
references please let me know. I can find everything it the library of
congress a few miles from where I work in Washington, DC.

I'm glad that the search results from Sociological Abstracts met your
needs. I think this is the best database you could use to generate
these types of results -- I am not aware of another source that
includes comprehensive coverage for the literature on Organizational

Hi Kevin,

I'd like to read your thesis when you've finished it! Looking at my
copy of Aubrey C. Daniels "Other Peoples Habits", he quotes
B.F.Skinner quite a few times. I was always taught that Skinner was
one of the main developers of this field.

returns 551 hits,
://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=%22B.F.Skinner+%22&meta=
returns 133,000 hits

best of luck,
fj
