What are the twenty most popular types of light, single and twin
engine, piston driven, general aviation aircraft? How many of each
were built or are
now currently registered?

Hi epw:

Thanks for the interesting question. A few clarifications are necessary:

1. How do you want us to measure "popularity"? Sales numbers? If so,
over what period?

2. For "how many of each were built", I assume you mean over the
entire manufacturing life of the aricraft?

3. By "types" do you mean specific models or general categories of aircraft?

Thanks.

1. Sales over the years that a particular model was sold.

2. Yes

3. Like a Cessna 172, Piper Warrier, Piper Cherokee Six, Etc.

Thanks!

epw-ga,

I checked the registrations database for planes registered in the US.

The list of the top 20 mmost popular models, according to the number
of registrations, are all Piper's and Cessna's. I did not see any
other manufacturer that made the top 20.

Does that jive with your knowledge of small planes? Would you expect
any other manufacturers to make the cut, other than Piper and Cessna?

Also, the specific model information is recorded in the database by
model number, rather than by popular name.

For instance, the plane that tops the list with 6,131 registrations is
the Piper PA-28-140. The database does not identify this as the Piper
Cherokee -- only the model number is given.

Would a Top 20 list of make and model numbers meet your needs?

Let me know.

Yes that would be perfect. It would be useful for me to know how you
found the data as well. Thanks!

epw-ga,

Thanks for giving me the go-ahead on this.

You can search the FAA database for aircraft registries at this link:

http://162.58.35.241/acdatabase/acmain.htm
FAA REGISTRY
Aircraft Registration Inquiry

I selected the "Make/Model" search option, and in the text boxes labeled:

"Enter Manufacturer and/or Model Name"

I entered ONLY the manufacuter's name, and left the "Model" field
blank. This sort of search will return a large list of all models
made by a specific manufacturer, along with details on the numbers of
registrations in each state, as well as a national total.

Unfortunately, there is no way to easily download or rank the results
by number of registrations. So, in order to create a list, I used the
Ctrl-F search function on each page of results to search for the word
"Total". This would take me quickly to the totals for each model
number, and of any model where the total was 1,500 or more, I copied
that to my master list.

The results of this (somewhat tedious, but fairly efficient) process
was the following 25 aircraft, all manufactured by either Cessna or
Piper:

PIPER PA-28-140
TOTAL - 6130

CESSNA 172M
TOTAL - 4634

PIPER J3C-65

CESSNA 150L

CESSNA 150M

PIPER PA-23-250
