Question ID: 514177
It seems that certain .gif files and even some HTML code, usually
links, do not show up in my browsers, either IE or firefox...

When I view the source code for the page, the code that would usually
hold the image or link is not even there. I know what to look for
because I'm an HTML programmer...

This seems REALLY wierd because it happens in both browsers. I'm on
Win XP home edition, SP1.

Any thoughts?

Hey there,
It'd be helpful if you coulod provide a couple of links to sites that
this occurs on.
Thanks,
djbaker-ga

Hello;

Thanks for your response.

I've put together a series of screen shots of pages displaying this
problem (with links), as well as screen shots of the source code that
I view. The problems are circled in green.

http://www.howtotieatie.info/btest/

1. The first example is the google home page!! - Notice the link
missing in my screen shot - but you may be able to see something
there.
Also notice the RED circle on the code for the google home page - this
gets added to EVERY page I view - whenever I view the code - even on
pages I've built - I know I didn't put it there!

2. The second example is a client site - notice the links missing?
Check it in your browser...

3. The third and most obvious does not even require me to show the
code because if you visit the page - you'll see there is a LOT missing
in my screen shot.

This is all very frustrating since I am the designer of these pages
(except google)!

I CAN however see these images in my browser when I do a direct test
from dreamweaver, but NOT even if I view the images individually on a
separate page.

In the case of the google ads on the howtotieatie site... when google
sent me a link to these ads - I couldn't see them on their pages, so I
had to get someone to copy the page and send me an email , where then
I could view the images.

Clear enough?

Please help!

To add; I have tried disabling Norton Anti-Virus, and this does not
seem to have any effect on the images/links not showing up, but DOES
remove the 'SymRealOnLoad' jscript code snippet...

Hello again!
This is a peculiar problem indeed. It appears to me that the common
thread between the various sites is the fact that from what I can tell
all the disappearing code is contained within a link. The AdSense ads
are linked images so they are not displaying, same with advertising
programs link on the main page as well as the British Columbia links.

Since my research thus far has turned up nothing useful the next step
in helping you out is to start to eliminate variables. As unlikely as
these variables may be they could potentially be causing the problem
so it is probably best to scratch them off the list.

The first is your ISP. If these problems are occurring on a laptop
try taking it somewhere with an access point and testing it out there.
If the problem persists then you know its probably a problem with
your computer. Another way to test this would be to have a friend
with a laptop come over and give it a try. If they don't have the
same problem its not an ISP problem.

The second step is to check what is between you and the ISP. Do you
have a router of some kind set up? A firewall of any kind? If you
do, turn these, off and run a direct connection from your computer to
your modem and see if this solves the problem.

If you've eliminated the above two then we're stuck with the problem
resting in your computer. Try downloading another browser, try Opera.
I know that the problem occurs in Firefox too but trying one more
browser won't hurt, especially since it does seem to work in
Dreamweaver's browser.

Try also to create another user on your computer and test it out
through that account.

Also try running your antivirus software and see if that comes up with
anything. Another good thing to try would be download a couple of
spyware blockers/killers and run those.

Run HijackThis as well and paste the text of the log file.
http://www.download.com/3000-8022-10227353.html

Hopefully one of these solutions will solve or at least identify the
root of the problem. If it does let me know and I will resubmit this
as an answer. If not, we'll know a lot more, even if its only what is
*not* causing the problem which will allow us to narrow down the list.

Best of luck,
djbaker-ga

Hi djbaker;

Thanks for all your time and effort on this! I hope this helps...

ISP is not the problem, I have 2, one dial-up (earthlink) and one RF
based high-speed, problem occurs using either.

I have a router, but as mentioned above, using dial-up modem creates same problem.

Downloaded Opera, still having the same issues in that browser too.

Created another user account on my system - same thing.

I have MS_AntiSpyware and XSoftSpy programs - still same problem...

And lastly... here is my log file from HiJackThis: :)

If you can figure this out - you're a god... (actually, we all are,
but that's a whole other conversation. :) )

Good Luck!

Hello djbaker;

Seems that deadlychiapet has provided me with a solution - I simply
had to turn off ad blocking in Norton AntiVirus! The links and images
that were not showing contain a string ( ad ) and caused Norton to
block them...

Thanks for all your efforts anyway!

And again, thank you for your help deadlychiapet!

I'm puzzled - how do you know there is supposed to be anything there
at all? Have you seen it with other browsers? Could it not just be a
flaw in the page design?

It may be the HTML is generated by a jsp or asp and some content is
conditional on browser type.

You should websearch for SymRealOnLoad for more info. Short answer:
"its generated by your symnantec internet security software"

You may have another ... something ... software/filter/proxy server
that removes things/links to the word "Advertising" or "Ads" ... I'm
willing to guess that the link on the g**gle.com page is "Advertising
Programs".

It's likely that it's your provider, proxy server, or a program (man,
I love me some alliteration!) on your pc.

Negative IANA GA.

If you look at the link to the page I posted with images of very
different situations, then check the links in your own browser, you'll
see that words in links that do not show up are names of towns in
British Columbia, Canada, and some of the images are both from Google
(ads hosted at google), and images hosted on my server.

Thanks for trying though...

btw... IANA: I am not a ... GA: G**gle Answers ... YRMV: Your Results May Vary.

And... I have a completely different layout of the Site Map than you
display. (Left justified, for one, All blue, for another (although I
hadn't visited any links until now).)

and... the link for the British Columbia Territory doesn't work.

Notice: Undefined index: link in

when attempting to go to another link.

Regardless of what your own browser shows, these are not *good
things*. Further, I'm still going with the fact that you have an ad
filter somewhere between keyboard and Internet connection. At least
*some* of the images you aren't seeing are definitely G**gle AdWord
related. I can't tell you why you're getting more blocked than that.
I'd suggest you consider taking a look at the report from HiJack This
to make certain...

Sorry to be an otherwise pest. I might suggest considering looking via
an anonymizer or a translator, just to see if any difference appears.
You might also verify your HOSTS file hasn't been tampered.

Good luck to you!

It looks like crythias-ga is correct. You may not think that the
British Columbia links are related to ads, but guess again! All of the
British Columbia links are in this format:

<a href="1A_home_inspections_inspectors_BritishColumbia_AD.shtml#contact">Abbottsford</a>

What is likely catching up your ad blocker is the AD or AD.s in the link code.

crythias

It might help if you offered a simple solution - like the one directly
below your smart *** comment...

Save your childishness for your playpen.

Thank you deadlyciapet - you've been most helpful.

You know, you didn't get any more of a solution than I've been telling
you since my first comment. All deadlychiapet said was that I was
correct. I already told you that you had an ad filter and you
basically told me you didn't.

You even said you disabled Norton Antivirus. I told you it's your
Symantec Internet Security software in my *first* comment. I assumed
that you would disable the Internet Security based upon that info, and
I'm sorry that I wasn't explicit enough. It's ok. You can yell at me
for being a smart ***, you only offered $2 for the q anyway. Not that
*I* as a commenter would ever see any of that.

I am currently experiencing the same problem on a customer's compaq
computer. Running XP Pro SP2. NAV 2005 & Spysweeper. I am currently
having problems on yahoo.com. On the top middle of the page, where it
says "YAHOO," I am getting a broken picture type icon. I right click
to view picture and it does the same thing. There are also a couple of
ads that are doing the same thing. One of the ads is from Dell and the
other is from NexTag.

Steps I have tried:
-Disable Router firewall
-Firefox & IE
-Disabled NAV 2005
-Changed setting for: "check for newer versions of stored pages" from
automatically to every visit to page in IE tools -> temporary internet
files -> settings
- Turned off pop-up blockers

Actually, I just solved my problem. I am running Webroot Spysweeper
v4.0.3. Naturally, this is a startup program that runs in the
backround. I right-clicked on Spysweeper icon in task bar and disabled
"Common Ad Sites Shield" and it works fine now. Double check that any
adware/spyware prevention software is not doing the same thing.

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts try to remove some entries in
this file. I'ts probably because of some anti-spyware application
you're using. Hope this helps.

Hello 3ring-ga,

When you upload the pages and images, check the file permissions on
your hosting server it may be 644, change them to 755 and try again on
your browser.

May be this would help you.

Thanks,
Rambee.

I had a similar problem. Running WinXPpro. Some Images from my own
site display on one computer but not on another. Same problem in IEv6,
Firefox and Opera.

Solution: Change privacy/ad-blocking settings in Zone alarm anti-virus software.

Here's a good link I came across for related IE problems.
