I am about set up a new home computer. I would like advice-perferably in step format-on how to transfer files, bookmarks, passworded accounts from my old system to the new one. Neither computer has a second hard drive. They both have 3.5 'floppy disk slots. I have already saved valuable files from MS Office/Works on to floppies. And once I am done with the old computer, how to 'wipe it clean' prior to donating it. Oh,and they are IBM compatible (not Macs). |

There are many ways of doing this depending on many factors. -total size of files to be transferred -old computer's hardware (does it have a burner or network card?) -importance of the data If the total size of the files is small (< 5 megs), then you could get by with just using floppies. Other methods: -burn all the data to a CD (this method is good if you want to create a backup [hard drives are known to fail and you could lose data at any time {personally, I create make two copies on CDs for my important stuff}]) -network the computers together to transfer the files -upload the data to a file storage site, then download to the new computer For wiping, just do a google search for: free disc wipe |

Don't transfer stuff to your new computer. Chances are that you will also transfer stuff that you don't want including viruses and spyware or only transfer some of what you need to run the program. For wiping your drive use Hard Drive Eraser v1.1 you can download it from here : http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,22920,00.asp |

Depending on what you want to keep and the hardware/software constraints, there are many ways to do this. In the simplest case (where the hard drives are similar sizes and types) you could just swap the drives between the two machines and not have to do any backups. But in a more complex situation (where the drives are different types, you want to move to a new operating system on the new computer, and neither computer has a network card or CD drive) there's a lot of work involved. In order to narrow it down, you'll need to explain the particulars of your situation in a little more detail. Some things to consider are: Hardware on each computer hard drive sizes presence of network cards (NIC) presence of CD drives/burners Software on each computer what version of Windows which web browser you use any software requiring a subscription What you want to backup bookmarks? users? how many users would you be opposed to recreating the users on the new machine? small programs/games do you have backup disks so you can reinstall your programs? do you have any programs with subscriptions that may not transfer? Antivirus - sometimes the subscription is only for one computer XP programs - again, only for one computer anything irreplaceable Another common option when donating a computer is to remove the hard drive from the old one and place it in the new one as a backup hard disk. That way, you can still retrieve any files from the old computer when you need them. After a while, you'll have copied all of the relevant files to the new hard drive and you can use the old drive as storage space. Since you can buy an older, smaller hard drive for next to nothing, it's pretty cheap to pick up an old drive to put in the old machine before donating it. The people you're donating it to won't know the difference and it keeps your data safe. I've done this a few times and it's usually the safest option. Well, I hope this helped a bit.
