How do I get a complete copy of the federal tax code and the
California Tax code? How tall is it when it is piled high?
How can I get a itemized listing of all the different taxes in
California and Federal? Is there a book been written on this?

I am running for elected office and want to use a tactic of exposing
the enormous size of the Code, the incredible amount of different ways
we are taxed and the obsurdity of it all. Every thing we do, touch,
wear, eat, drive is taxed and taxed. How do I get a comprehensive
list. This information will be used in a speech or in a written piece
on my negitive position on raising taxes and how out-of-control we
are.

Hello -

Thanks for posting your question.

I've addressed each of your questions below:

How do I get a complete copy of the federal tax code and the
California Tax code?
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Federal

Title 26 of the US Code is where the federal tax code is outlined.
You can download the entire text at this House of Representatives
link:

  House of Representatives
  US Code, Title 26
  http://uscode.house.gov/download/pls/Title_26.txt

A compressed format (smaller download size) is here:

  http://uscode.house.gov/download/pls/Title_26.ZIP

You can download specific sections here:

  http://uscode.house.gov/download/title_26.php

You can search the code online here:

  Cornell
  http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode26/usc_sup_01_26.html

State of California

The California Board of Equalization maintains the Sales and Use Tax
statutes and regulations. The first link below is a general listing.
The second link, containing the regulations, has much more detail on
each statute in terms of their implementation in specific instances.

  Sales and Use Tax Law
  http://www.boetaxes.ca.gov/business/Vol1/Sut/sutl.pdf

  Sales and Use Tax Regulations
  http://www.boetaxes.ca.gov/business/Vol1/Sut/sutr.pdf

You can search these documents within Adobe Acrobat, the reader
required to view them. You can download Acrobat at this link, if you
don't already have it:

How tall is it when it is piled high?
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
For the federal code, if you were to assume 12 point Courier New font,
with 1 inch margins, then the 24 megabyte file (rounded; approximately
24,000,000 characters long) would be about 7,979 pages on 8.5" x 11"
paper. 7,979 pages of regular 20 lb paper stacked is about 30 inches,
or about 2.5 feet. This would include all of the beginning table of
contents information.

For the California Code, if you were to print out the Sales and Use
Tax Regulations file, at 558 pages, you'd be looking at somewhere
around 2 inches high for 20 lb., 8.5" x 11" paper.

How can I get a itemized listing of all the different taxes in
California and Federal? Is there a book been written on this?

The resources above will provide you with this information online. A
publisher named Thomson has this information in book format. Please
see the following two links:

  Internal Revenue Code - $92

  California Tax Handbook, 2005 - $59

Is there a list of all the different taxes or do I have to go through
the whole book?

Can the full tax code be bought or do you have to down load the whole thing?
There must be a bound copy somewhere

If you take a look at this link:

http://uscode.house.gov/download/title_26.php

It provides the titles of each section in the federal code. Each
section talks about a different kind of tax.

Similarly, the table of contents at this link should show you the
titles of each sectio pertaining to a each tax:

http://www.boetaxes.ca.gov/business/Vol1/Sut/sutl.pdf

With regard to the book question, yes -- the Thomson links below are
where you can purchase the tax codes in hardbound copies:

  Internal Revenue Code - $92
  http://ria.thomson.com/EStore/detail.asp?ID=IR105&site=ovirc

  California Tax Handbook, 2005 - $59
  http://ria.thomson.com/EStore/detail.asp?ID=CTH05&site=ggCATax

Let me know if that doesn't answer your questions.

OK Seahunter,

Since your planning to run for office, and I don't know who you are,
I don't know if I should really help you...but...here's an idea you'll
love, if you can afford it.

Invest about $1,000 in the complete LOOSELEAF tax code books
http://tax.cchgroup.com/Store/Products/CCE-CCH-13.htm?cs_catalog=TADS

Call CCH for a complete description of this product.
This is the stuff you see in tax and law offices that covers
the entire wall. A dozen or more heavy volumes.

Get a wheelbarrow and fill it with these books and
push them on stage, or have a assistant or two do it.

You can make quite a production of how weighty they are.

You can probably get used/prior year books cheaply from
offices who no longer use them, since we all get our
data on CD these days.

CCH has a Calif looseleaf service.

And yes, if I had caught this question, I'd have
given you a long list of California taxes.
It might have been fun to create the list.
But another way you can look impressive is to get
your hands on a copy of California's Package X -
which is just the book of forms to photocopy.
It weighs about two pounds and sits about 2 inches high.
And there is a looseleaf version of that, too.

Good luck with your campaign.

Good stuff. Need to shock people how bad it real is. This is the
kind of stuff I need. Have any more Ideas? About 'not knowing who
I am'....If I am looking at the absurdity of the tax code...I sould be
the right guy.
