I am looking for up-to-date figures on real estate holdings as a
percentage of total assets in 10 industries: railroads, variety
stores, pharmaceuticals, restaurants, misc. amuesment and recreation,
depart. stores, hotels, auto manufacturing, grocery stores, and
semiconductors. Such figures should be at the oldest from January 1,
2004 and must be from a reputable source (well researched). I am
looking for something that is indentical (but more current) to table 2
on page 8 of the following paper:

I have this data for large, publicly traded companies in the
industries you seek. I propose to calculate real estate holdings as a
percentage of assets for those companies, and use the aggregate (the
total real estate holdings divided by total assets for the companies
in my sample) as a proxy for the entire industry. My guess is that's
along the lines of what this other organization did, as asset
information for private companies is very difficult to obtain.

If this data will satisfy you, I can answer the question promptly.

Doing this for large companies would be very easy since I could sift
through a few filings of large public companies in each industry. The
study to which I refer surveys over 4000 companies.

Sorry I couldn't help you. I must say, however, that the odds of your
getting numbers for 4,000 companies are astronomical. I doubt even
Compustat has that much data, simply because companies are not
required to disclose it, and many (if not most) don't.

In any case, good luck.
