Question ID: 525812
I need to remove Aurora/ABetterInternet from my computer (XP Home). I
have run Spybot S&D, AdAware, Microsoft AntiSpyware, McAfee, and
Auroras own removal tool (worthless). Each finds some portion of the
problem, but the popups persist every time I open my browser (IE 6.0).
The program also seems to reinstall itself every time I reboot.

This question has been asked by others here, but I may need some extra
help. I've never used HiJackThis, and will need some hand-holding.

Hi courtneyp!!

Most times one computer is infected by several malwares at the same
time, this is why is difficult to remove them, but don't worry with
patient and some clarifications we will do it.

I will start the answer for the easy part:
Just visit the following page and download the Aurora uninstaller:
http://www.mypctuneup.com/evaluate.php?b=aurora

Please do not run it yet. First I suggest you to download Ewido
security suite from here (Trial version):
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Install Ewido and update it running the following installer:
http://download.ewido.net/ewido-signatures-full-20050526.exe

One more task before cleaning, download and install CleanUp! to clean
the internet temp files and cookies:
"CleanUp!":
http://home.comcast.net/~sgould4567/software/cleanup/index.html

Download it from here:
http://downloads.stevengould.org/cleanup/CleanUp40.exe

Now yes, close the browser (all opened instances) and run the CleanUp!
program, then follow the instructions and run the Aurora uninstaller
and then use EWIDO to scan and fix your computer. If you can save the
scan log from Ewido to post it here later.
Reboot your computer and open your browser to test your computer
behavior and to download HijackThis:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/Merijn/HijackThis.zip
or
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

Use the folowing tutorial to know how to use it:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=42

What I need is that you post a HijackThis log here (using the request
for an answer clarification feature), so run HijackThis and let it
scan your computer, then WITHOUT fixing anything generate a log and
post it here as a request of a clarification. With this info I will be
able to help you. Follow the instructions on this part of the
tutorial:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=42#HowToUse

At this point your HJT log must show a clean system, but some
remanents must be fixed so I will be glad to help you in the next
steps. Also any help you need with this first steps do not hesitate to
ask me for it and I will give you further assistance.

Best regards.

Hi again!!

I am analyzing your HJT log, in the meantime I suggest you to let
Ewido fix the pestwares found by it, reboot your computer and post a
new HJT log.

Thank you.

Clarification of Answer by livioflores-ga on 26 May 2005 23:56 PDT
Hi!!

I finished with your HJT log, so this is the list of things to be
fixed if they are still present AFTER run EWIDO and let it remove what
it found:
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {ACB1E670-3217-45C4-A021-6B829A8A27CB} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [trumqa] c:\windows\system32\nchbbp.exe
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner -
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

To fix with HJT I sugest you to do it in Safe Mode:
"Starting your computer in Safe mode":
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

So (If you did not yet) Run EWIDO --> Scan your PC and remove ANY
thing that it finds --> reboot in Safe Mode --> Run HiJackThis -->
Perform a scan --> Check to fix if still present the items in the
above list --> reboot in normal mode --> Post a new HJT log to verify.

I will wait your response to this clarification.

Regards,
livioflores-ga

I followed your instructions, and below is the HJT log I just ran. Of
the things I was supposed to fix, only the first two items were fixed.
The O4 item was not there when I ran HJT again. The O23 item keeps
coming back. I tried twice to fix it in HJT. I fix it, then run
another scan right away and it's there again.

Clarification of Answer by livioflores-ga on 27 May 2005 07:35 PDT
Hi!!

We are closer!!
Reboot in safe mode and run EWIDO again, see if it is detect something
and let it fix what it finds.
Then, without reboot, scan your PC with HJT and check to fix the following items:
c:\windows\system32\bgoxtn.exe
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner -
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing)

Then, again without reboot, look for the file
c:\windows\system32\bgoxtn.exe and try to delete it if it is stil
present.

Reboot your computer and check its behavior and also post a new HJT log.

Regards.

Followed your instructions. Could not find bgoxtn.exe anywhere. As
for the O23 item, I tried again several times to delete it in HJT. I
check it, click "Fix Checked" in HJT, then run another HJT scan and
it's right back. Here's the HJT log I created while in safe mode:

P.S.

The good news is that I'm not having problems with the Aurora popups
any more, and the cookies for that don't return right after I delete
them.

Spybot scanned clean, as did Microsoft AntiSpyware, but AdAware keeps finding this:

Windows Object recognized!
    Type : RegData
    Data :
    Rootkey : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Object : SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
    Value : Shell
    Data :

I have no idea if that's helpful or relevant at all.

WAIT! I did a little research and was able to use HJT to delete
SvcProc. Here is my latest HJT log. Can you tell me if it looks
clean?

Thanks.

Clarification of Answer by livioflores-ga on 27 May 2005 22:02 PDT
Hi!!

First of all excuse me for the delay.

Just to clarify your previous requests:
"Could not find bgoxtn.exe anywhere." That was a good new, surely
Ewido has deleted it for you.

"As for the O23 item, I tried again several times to delete it in HJT."
Such item was added as a comment "(file missing)", this means that
someone/thing has deleted the file C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe and it is
missed, but if it is missed something is searching for it, normaly
this pest run from a command at the system.ini file and you had found
a way to delete such entry at the system.ini file or similar.

The Adaware advice is not relevant. You can fix or ignore it.

Regarding your last HJT log it looks CLEAN!! Hurrayy!!!
