I have recently found out a lost boyhood friend of mine was killed in
1973 in San Francisco.

Is there anyway to obtain the crime report from so long ago? Where
would I go find it?

Good afternoon tom3128-ga,

Thank you for posting this question. In answer to your question of
?Is there anyway to obtain the crime report from so long ago? Where
would I go find it??, I would like to supply you with the following
information.

The best way to obtain information on your friends death without
knowing if a lawsuit was ever brought against anyone for his murder
would be to obtain the coroner?s report.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner (or coroner) ?investigates about
two-thirds of all deaths in San Francisco," back to 1906. All
records prior to that date were destroyed in the fires of the 1906
Earthquake.

There are two parts of a case:

1. Coroner's Register: this includes all of the biographical
information, a history of the case, and witnesses; and

2. Necropsy Report: a multiple page report with autopsy details.

If you are local, you can request to see the case report. Just give
them a day to pull it from the archive. If you are out-of-town, you
can request a copy of it via the phone.

For certified copies of the Medical Examiner's records, send a check
or money order for $30.00, payable to the San Francisco Medical
Examiner, with the full name of the deceased person, and if known, the
date of death and the Medical Examiner's Case Number.

Non-certified records are $.10 cents per page.

Please contact The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to find out
how many pages are in the Medical Examiner's report. It can take up to
a week to recover the records from storage and determine the number of
pages in the report.

You can contact them at:
Office of the Chief Medical Examiner
City and County of San Francisco
Hall of Justice
850 Bryant Street - North Terrace
San Francisco, CA 94103
Telephone: (415) 553-1694
Fax: (415) 553-1650
Email: Medical.Examiner@sfgov.org

If you don't know the date of death, you can look through the Social
Security Death Index at the link below. If the name is found, it will
most likely give you the date of death.

If you want any help looking up newspaper articles related to his
murder or obituaries, please supply me with his name and I will see
what I can do for you. Otherwise, I hope you find this answer useful.
If anything needs clarification before rating, please do not hesitate
to ask!
