Where can I get a step by step plan, and parts to rebuild my IBM
Thinkpad Battery?  There has to be a less expensive way than
purchasing a replacement

That appears to answer the question however, it is a bigger pain than

If you're connecting batteries in paralell (positive to positive,
negative to negative), make absolutely sure that the batteries are
within about 0.15 volts of eachother -- otherwise, the battery with
the higher charge will charge the lower battery at a dangerous rate.

Oh yeah, put a 100 ohm (1/2-watt or better) resistor across the higher
pack for a while to bring it down to the same level.  The resistor
will produce heat as it discharges the battery (at a safer rate).
