By the way, I have cfgmgr52.dll that I have disabled from my startup
but it is still listed as part of my startup menu when I type MSCONFIG
in the RUN box.

Thanks,
Angel

Hi!!

As davids77 said, you can delete such file in safe mode, but it would
be very helpful if you post a HijackThis log here, with it I can give
you an accurate answer.

Just in case see the following tutorial if you do not know how to use it:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=42

Remember to scan your PC and post the log here WITHOUT FIXING
ANYTHING, I will analyze it and then I will tell you what to do to fix
your computer.

livioflores-ga

Hi!!

Are arod777-ga and a1agifts-ga the same user?, I remember you
a1agifts-ga, but it is the first time I see you arod777-ga. In order
to be sure that I am answering to a1agifts-ga please log as such user
(not arod777) and post the log as a question clarification, not as a
comment.

Thank you.

Hi!!

Clarified the point, I post the answer.

Reboot into safe mode, see for instructions, if you need them, here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Still in safe mode, and with all browser instances closed, run again
HijackThis and scan your computer (now you do not need to generate a
log). From the scan result list check to fix the following
items:

Hi livioflores-ga,

I took a while to reply because following your every step DETAILED I
lost all of my settings on my pc. I could not see any of my icons when
I boot up. I only saw my background. I tried to boot up in Safe Mode
and no luck. I was on the phone with Dell for 5 hours until we
restored my pc to an earlier date and my pc is back up but I lost lots
of information.

Should we start over again? Do I list my HJT while in safe mode?
Please be specific as to only remove spyware as I went through hell to
get my pc back up. I am 100% sure I only clicked on FIX to the files
you selected.

Thanks,

Angel

Request for Question Clarification by livioflores-ga on 30 Jun 2005 20:53 PDT
Hi!!

I am so sorry to read that bad news, certainly no one fix done in HJT
(in your case) could do that, possible the hijack or another virus or
pest do that, sometimes an infected operative system become corrupted,
probably this was your case.
Just for the future keep into account that a simple change in the
registry can hide all the desktop icons, see this page:
"Hide Desktop Icons":
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kbase/WindowsTips/WindowsNT/RegistryTips/IEandExplorer/HideDesktopIcons.html

Regarding to your computer, a new HJT log is neded and is preferable
to generate a log in normal mode (safe mode must be used to fix). Also
tell me if you are continue experiencing troubles with cfgmgr52.dll or
others.

I also noticed that you have SP1 (Windows XP service pack 1) but not
SP2, note that the SP2 eliminates several vulnerabilities and makes
Windows less vulnerable to malware infection.

Hi Angel!!

Reboot is Safe Mode:
Uninstall anything to do with C:\Program Files\Cas\Client\casmf.dll :
First see if you can do it in the normal way (through a uninstaller or
the Windows Add/Remove Programs utility at the Control Panel. If not
follow this instructions:
Using the task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) kill this processes if they are running:
casclient.exe
casstub.exe

Unregister these DLLs with Regsvr32:
C:\Program Files\Cas\Client\casmf.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MPISEQ.DLL
See instructions on the unregister dll files procedure here:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/content.aspx?q=64463#UnregisterDLLs

Now, still in safe mode, run HJT and check to fix the following
(remember that no browser instance must be running during the fixing
procedure):
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: IeCaptureBho Object - {7c1ce531-09e9-4fc5-9803-1c2956615786}

O20 - Winlogon Notify: Run - C:\WINDOWS\system32\MPISEQ.DLL

Reboot and delete the following files if they are present:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MPISEQ.DLL
and
casclient.exe
casmf.dll
casstub.exe
They are probably located at the C:\Program Files\Cas\Client\ folder

After that generate a fresh HJT log and post it here.
Regarding to the error message, please tell me if it is still
happening, and add more info about it, thank you.

Hi!!

To unregister the requested files do the following:

1. Click the Start button, and select Run
2. Enter this command line:
         regsvr32 /u C:\Program Files\Cas\Client\casmf.dll

Then again:
1. Click the Start button, and select Run
2. Enter this command line:
         regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\system32\MPISEQ.DLL

Then reboot your computer in safe mode and search for this files and delete them.
To be sure that the files will be showed follow the "How to Show
System Files" procedure:
-Click Start.
-Open My Computer.
-Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
-Select the View Tab.
-Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
-Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
-Click Yes to confirm.
-Click OK.

Regarding to the last HJT log, I will need a new one, but before you
must do the following things:
Unregister the above files and then download and install Ewido
security suite trial version:
http://download.ewido.net/ewido-setup.exe

Then you must update it, do it downloading the following file and running it:
http://download.ewido.net/ewido-signatures-full-20050704.exe

Or visit this page:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Then reboot in safe mode and run it to scan your computer. Let it fix
anything that it finds. Remember to tell me what it have fixed.
Reboot in normal mode and generate a new HJT log and post it here
(preferably as a Question clarification rather than as a Comment).

Thank you.

Hi livioflores-ga,
I have 3 questions:

Question #1
I tried too unregister the files you specified and I got the following
error messages in regular mode and in safe mode:

1. Click the Start button, and select Run
2. Enter this command line:
         regsvr32 /u C:\Program Files\Cas\Client\casmf.dll
Error Message: (c:\Program) failed Specified module could not be found.
--------------------
1. Click the Start button, and select Run
2. Enter this command line:
         regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\system32\MPISEQ.DLL
Error Message: Being used by another program

I clicked on CTRL, ALT and DEL and did not see it used by any program.

-------------------
Question #2
Can you clarify as to which files to delete in safe mode?
Are they
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MPISEQ.DLL
and
casclient.exe
casmf.dll
casstub.exe
--------------------
Question #3
I could not download the program you specified as the website seems to
be down. I tried all day yesterday and today and cannot access the
website:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Thanks,

Angel

Hi!!

New (and more detailed) procedure:
- Download Ewido and install it (only if you did not install it yet):
http://download.ewido.net/ewido-setup.exe

- Then update Ewido, just download and run the following file (I
tested the links and they are working now):
http://download.ewido.net/ewido-signatures-full-20050705.exe

- Download and install KillBox:
http://www.scancomplete.com/files/KillBox.zip

- extract and run the killbox.exe file
- When it loads type the full path to the file you would like to
delete in the field: C:\WINDOWS\system32\MPISEQ.DLL
- press the Delete File button (looks like a red circle with a white X).
- It will prompt you to reboot, allow it to do so, and hopefully your
file will now be deleted.
- Boot in safe mode.
- delete if still present the folder: C:\Program Files\Cas\
- Whatever be the result on the previous tasks, please run Ewido, scan
your computer with it and let it fix all that it finds.
- Reboot in normal mode and generatea fresh HJT log.
- Post the log here.

Hello livioflores-ga,

You have been extremely helpful!!! I thank you!!

I downloaded Ewido and ran it in normal mode and fixed everything.
Then I downloaded KillBox and it would not find
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MPISEQ.DLL.

I then went to safe mode and ran Ewido, Spy Sweeper, Spybot, and Adaware.

Here is my new HJT log:

Hi!!

Finally your HJT log looks clean, so I am now using the answer box.
Only one "cosmetic" fix is needed:
Run HJT and check to fix the following item:
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Reboot and test your computer behavior.

The utilization of HijackThis and Ewido in combination have cleaned
your computer. The next thing to do is to "vaccinate" it by installing
and run SpywareBlaster:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Download it from here:
http://ct7support.com/downloads/javacool/z341a/spywareblastersetup34.exe

After installing it you must update SpywareBlaster, then use the
protection features of it, for a guidance here is a nice tutorial:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=49

Remember to check for updates once a week; this will help to keep your
computer clean and protected.

If you need further assistance regarding to this question, please do
not hesitate to post a request for a clarification.

Regards.

Hello livioflores-ga,

Thanks!!
Before I follow your new suggestions...I downloaded Spy Sweeper and I
am using the trial version. Do you suggest that I continue to use this
program as it monitors my usage and PREVENTS spyware? Any other
software you suggest that I use while I surf the net along with Spy
Sweeper and SpywareBlaster?

Should I keep these programs in the background?

Thanks,

Angel

Hi!!

Spy Sweeper is a nice software, but I am not familiar with it, Ewido
works in background and it is great also, but both are paid programs
and Ewido is greater as a removal tool. I suggest you to use
SpywareGuard, it provides a real-time protection solution against
spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection
method. It is free also:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html

There is a tutorial here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/Using_SpywareGuard_to_protect_your_computer_from_Spyware__and__Hijackers-tut50.html

If you want to install SpywareGuard, consider to uninstall Spy Sweeper
first, it not good have your computer running redundant tools, it uses
resources and could generate fatal errors.

Hi livioflores-ga,

1) If I use SpywareGuard or Spy Sweeper (one or the other...not both)
can I still use Microsoft Anti Spyware Beta?

2) Should I still keep the programs you suggested and run them every
week along with Spybot and Adaware?

3) Do you think that this has taken care of my problem:
Fatal error message that reads as follows...
C000021A Fatal System error in f 0x000000080 (0x00000000 0x00000000)

I have not seen it again but it used to turn off my pc completely
after I did the first HJT.

Thanks,

Angel

Hi!!

1) If I use SpywareGuard or Spy Sweeper (one or the other...not both)
can I still use Microsoft Anti Spyware Beta?
Yes you can, but do not use two different softwares to do the same
thing at the same time, this is the rule. Microsoft Anti Spyware Beta
can be used to scan your computer, not as a resident protection (you
must disable this option if it works in this way).

2) Should I still keep the programs you suggested and run them every
week along with Spybot and Adaware?
That is a good idea, like to a second medical opinion.

3) Do you think that this has taken care of my problem:
Fatal error message that reads as follows...
C000021A Fatal System error in f 0x000000080 (0x00000000 0x00000000)
Cannot be sure about that, these things happens for a lot of reasons,
sometimes the Hard drive fails or the memory, these problems must be
token into account when happen repeteadly.
You have a lot of programs running together, this forces the system to
work hardly and sometimes lead to fatal errors, try to run only the
programs that you really need, and start on demmand those you need
eventualy.

You can delete that file in safe mode.

Angel you need to restart your pc and enter safemode by pushing F8
while your pc is booting then run your spyware programs. This will
get rid of most if not all of your spyware. Running these programs
without being in safemode doesn't really do any good.

Hi!!

Are arod777-ga and a1agifts-ga the same user?, I remember you
a1agifts-ga, but it is the first time I see you arod777-ga. In order
to be sure that I am answering to a1agifts-ga please log as such user
(not arod777) and post the log as a question clarification, not as a
comment.

Thank you.

Hi livioflores-ga,

Hey,

Sometimes more dangerous spyware and adware can come up on spyware
scans but can't be deleted (as you've encountered). Sometimes they
can be recognized on a virus scan as well. Preferably Norton or
Macafee. If they can't delete it you can follow any instructions they
give to delete registry keys using the regedit command under run. The
virus scan's site should tell you those keys to delete. I would
suggest backing up your registry before you mess around with it. As
you've seen with HJT it's very easy to screw things up and then sit
for hours trying to fix it.

Good luck,
Chaz228-ga

I would also suggest doing this in safe mode as well though you
probably already figured that..

Hi livioflores-ga,

Here is my new log. I now also have a bigger problem.

The full error message reads as follows...
C000021A Fatal System error in f 0x000000080 (0x00000000 0x00000000)

I have windowx xp Home Version. My computer shuts down completely and
gives me a blue screen with that message. I have to reboot the
computer. This just began after I did the Hijack This.

Subject: Re: Spyware on my pc
From: arod777-ga on 04 Jul 2005 10:42 PDT

Hi livioflores-ga,

Thanks for the reply...
Ok before I go on to the next step...you listed several in your post
can you clarify a few things for me??

1- I found a folder for CAS in my Program files. I doubled clicked and
saw an uninstall link. I proceeded and uninstalled it.
I do not see any instances of
casclient.exe
casstub.exe
running when I click on CTRL, ALT DEl.

2- Can you clarify how to do the following:
Unregister these DLLs with Regsvr32:
C:\Program Files\Cas\Client\casmf.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MPISEQ.DLL

I am a real novice who is very scared that my pc will crash again like
it did when I used the HJT for the first time.
Waiting for your reply...

Thanks,

Angel
