Hello cabowabo-ga,

Thank you for your question.

I've organized a digest of links to articles and reports related to
what you listed in your question.

“Over the past 5 to 10 years, the private label market has experienced
rapid growth. Private label brands were once viewed as less expensive
alternatives to national brands. Because of retailer consolidation,
the retail landscape has become far more competitive among larger
players. Store brands are now being viewed as differentiating agents
with opportunities to build category volume and profit.”

Private Label Industry News Press Updates:

“Store brands today account for one of every five products sold in
supermarkets. The trend for leading retailers in recent years,
moreover, has been to market their store brands aggressively by
developing new categories and adding more premium products to their
private label assortments. As a result, private label sales in the
channel continue to outpace national brands, and private label unit
market share increased to 21% in 2001, according to the latest
industry statistics.”
“Consumer acceptance of store brands has never been higher. In a
recent survey conducted by The Gallup Organization, more than half of
all shoppers said they purchase store brands regularly or frequently,
and a similar number agreed with the statement “store brands are
brands just like national brands.”

Here is another article on Private Label industry:

“As shown in a Gallup study conducted for the Private Label
Manufacturers Association, consumer awareness of private label
products is nearly universal at 91% up from 86% in 1991. Eighty-three
percent of consumers said they regularly buy store brands, a 6%
increase and three quarters say store brands are well packaged and
perform as well as the national brands. Finally, price has become less
important as a contributing factor to a consumer purchase of store
branded products.”
The Private Label HBA market is growing at over twice the rate of both
the total private label and HBA markets. The total HBA market was
nearly $42.0 billion in 1997, up 3.7% over 1996. Total private label
HBA dollar share across all retail outlets was 10.9% versus 10.2% in
1993. Private label continued to grow and reached double digit levels
in all classes of trade for the first time last year. In mass
merchandisers alone the national brand unit share was up 8% while
store brand growth was nearly double that at +17.3%.

A detailed comprehensive nineteen page report on Canada Private Label
Grocery Opportunities 2000:

“Canada has built a solid reputation as an excellent source for
private label food products. Perhaps the best opportunities for U.S.
product exist with regional independent grocery chains with little or
no private label products, with manufacturers' that produce private
label currently or focusing on categories that have potential growth.
U.S. exporters wishing to capitalize on the opportunities, that
private label programs offer, should base their market entry
strategies on quality research.”

ACNielsen Asiapacific Newsletter:

“One in three shoppers in Asia Pacific buys private-label products,
with marked differences between countries.
Private label is most developed in Singapore, where almost half of all
shoppers say they have bought such products.
The figure drops to just 13% in Malaysia, where the market is in its
infancy.
Regionally, shoppers are most likely to have bought private labels in
either staple or paper product categories, and least likely in
frozen/chilled or non-alcoholic beverages.
Shoppers who currently buy private label would consider buying private
labels in most product areas. Very few private label shoppers would
not consider buying them in household or paper categories.
Not surprisingly, in most countries the leading private label brand is
from the leading chain.”

market share of 60%. Private label market share in France runs to
43.6% for the most popular wine varietals. And in Germany, private
label market share ranges from 38.0% for red wine varietals to 44.6%
