Could anyone tell me anything about the Modern German Art Exhibition

Including who organised it, who exhibited, who attended, when exactly

Dear ferker-ga,

You have asked a complex question for the price you have offered, but
I have taken to answer it as I have an interest in art history.

The exhibition was titled ?Twentieth Century German Art?. It was an
exhibition of the works of artists who were very unpopular with the
Nazi Regime in Germany - they were described as ?degenerates?. The
initial dates for the exhibition were to be 8 to 30 July, 1938, but
due to overwhelming popularity it was extended twice to 27 August. It
was described as an outstanding exhibition by art critics. The
exhibition was staged by an Organizing Committee (no further
information). Its Chairman was Herbert Reid who stated that the
exhibition had been under planning for the previous 10-15 years. Any
funds raised were to go to distressed exiled artists. The exhibition
was opened by Augustus John. A list of attendees at the opening is
referenced below. There were 270 exhibits representing 40 years of
German Art. Artists included: Beckmann, Klee, Hofer, Kirchner,
Kokoshka, Klobe, Marc, Barlach, Kollwitz and Mueller.

The above information has been taken from the Times Newspaper
(London), archives of which can be found in any good library. You may
wish to examine them to obtain additional information.

July 8, 1938 - report of the opening
July 9, 1938 - list of attendees at the opening
July 25, 1938 - three pictures purchased by Manchester Art Gallery
August 22, 1938 - extended

?Synopsis
Max Beckmann is widely regarded as one of the most important
figurative painters of the last hundred years. "On My Painting" can
give a valuable insight into understanding his work. It was composed
in 1938 at a crucial jucture in Beckmann's life, and was read by him
at the opening of the Twentieth Century German Art exhibition.?

"It was through his images that Beckmann felt he had the best chance
to connect with his contemporary society, and now perhaps our own. In
1938, having fled Nazi Germany and speaking on his art at the

some of what have been called problems of Expressionism, despite his
supposed philosophical distance from that movement.?
