I have an identical set-up, plus the need for remote access. I use
BeInSync, and am very pleased with it. Even the free version is
sufficient for most of my needs, running a small business with laptop,
desk top, and business partner at a remote location, though I think I
will subscribe for access to some of the extras. BeInSync are at:

The free version syncs five files which suits me. There is a polite
nag screen inviting me to upgrade each time I boot up, but for a
product with no time restrictions I don't mind that.
I've even been able to download a program exec. file to one computer,
and install it on the other !

There's a small learning curve - e.g. you access synced the files
through the BeInSync interface - but there's plenty of online support.
It was extremely easy to set up.
Obviously for the actual syncing to take place, both computers need to
be on. But your up-to- date files are accessible after that even if
only one machine is on. Next time they are both on, you can sync any
new changes.
The free version is quite adequate for home use or a small business,
but subscriptions are from a very reasonable $6.95 a month with
discounts for one year or two year options.

The reason it's not just automatic, I think, is this: Wi-fi allows you
to take your wi-fi enabled laptop to any area with a wireless hotspot
or router. You could be in an office, a hotel, or a cafe.
If all the computers tieing in to that router could automatically see
each other, you would have access to everybody elses' computers, and
they would have access to yours ! Not a good idea.
Hence the need for a program in between to identify just the computers
you want and are permitted to link.
