This is so embarrasing, but what the heck! It's Friday and it's been
an incredibly long week....

I've received an Email issued to 50 people and I want to add them all
to a new group contact. I do not want to add them one at a time into
my contact list but simple transfer all Email addresses into one
distribution list.

The question is: how?

Hi boxclever,

Not really embarrassing, I haven't found a way to add multiple
contacts at once either. However, there is a way that is quicker than
typing each contact in your address book. Try this and let me know if
it suits your needs.

Open the email you received that contains the email addresses you want
to add to your address book. Right click the first name so it
highlights. Click "Add to Outlook Contacts".

Don't click Save And Close, click the Save And New icon (just to the
right of Save And Close). Doing so saves the current information and
takes you to a New Contact dialog box in one easy step.

Go to the next name you want to add and repeat. Continue doing this
until all the names are added to your address book.

Looking forward to your clarification.

Best regards,
Rainbow

Hi Rainbow....thanks for the rapid response and apologies for my slow
uptake...now Sunday...

I followed your [clear instructions] but it seems that each time I
click on the Save and New icon it saves the first as a new contact and
then each in turn is saved until such time as I'll have 50 new
contacts with only the Email address filled in.

I don't want to add these people to my address book, but I do what to
Email them on a regular basis, as a Group; that is a Mail will be sent
to everyone one of them or not at all - I do not forsee an instance
where I might need to Mail just one of the 50.

I've tried Anspu's trick [thanks btw] and it gives an error message
that X addresses are not known, or their format is incorrect.

Doesn't look hopeful. Of the two Anspu gets closer. I'll leave the
question open as I am now less tired but more intrigued!!

Regards to all

Hi boxclever,

Thank you for your clarification.

Since you say "I don't want to add these people to my address book,
but I do what to
Email them on a regular basis, as a Group; that is a Mail will be sent
to everyone one of them or not at all - I do not forsee an instance
where I might need to Mail just one of the 50."

Try this and let me know if it suits your purpose:

In the e-mail message you want to copy the names from, select the
names in the To or Cc box.

On the Edit menu, click Copy.

On the File menu, point to New, and then click Distribution List.

In the Name box, type a name for the distribution list. (I tried it
and called it "GROUP")

Click Select Members.

In the Add to distribution list list, right-click, and then click
Paste on the shortcut menu.

Click Save and Close.

Now whenever I'd want to email this group of people, I would type
GROUP in the To Box.

Waiting to hear your views.

Best regards,
Rainbow

Thanks for the second comment. It's pretty much the same as Anspu
suggested and I'm getting the same response : Outlook error window
"Name Verification...PLease select the address to use...".

I can only assume that since the sender of the mail has personalised
how names *appear* in his address book I am getting this perpetual
error. Obvioulsy this error window prevents me from clicking the "OK"
button. I can see all 50 names separated by ";" in the members text
box so in theory your solution [and Anspu's] should work. There is
obvioulsy something amiss with the original mail or with me and the
way in which I'm doing what you're both suggesting.

I think it fair that the answer be posted as it will probably help
others with a similar problem, even if I need to do a bit of a
workaround.

Thanks again

Hi BoxClever,

Thank you for accepting my findings as an answer to your question. I
am re-posting it here for your convenience.

Like you say, the error you are getting must have something to do with
the appearance of the senders address book. I tried the procedure,
using an email I received, and it worked with no errors.

All the best,
Rainbow

Hi there,

This is what Outlook help says. I tried it and it doesnt take too much time.

Copy names from an e-mail message and put them into a distribution list

In the e-mail message you want to copy the names from, select the
names in the To or Cc box.

On the Edit menu, click Copy.

On the File menu, point to New, and then click Distribution List.

In the Name box, type a name for the distribution list.

Click Select Members. In the Add to distribution list list,
right-click, and then click Paste on the shortcut menu.

Hi boxclever,

You are getting the error because not all the people on the
message are in the directory that you are using. You can get around
this problem by copying the names from a different place, rather than
the message header (which only shows the known as names and not the
SMPT addresses). You can copy the names of the people from the
"internet headers" section in the View --> Options screen and then
paste it in the distribution list. I was able to reproduce the same
error that you were getting and was able to resolve it using the steps
above.

Best of luck,
Anspu
