About one in ten employees in the US -- 10.5% to be precise -- are
considered managers.

The figures can be found in the Statistical Abstracts of the United States:

you find the labor statistics:

Section 12
Labor Force, Employment, and Earnings

and in Table No. 597:
Employed Civilians by Occupation, Sex, Race, and Hispanic Origin: 2003

you can see the following:

Total number of employees in the United States:  137,736,000

Total number of Management occupations in the US: 14,468,000

FYI, the largest categories of managers were CEO's (1,617,000) and
Financial managers (1,041,000).
