Question ID: 583173
I have some dress shirts with "mother of pearl" style buttons. The
button material is some sort of plastic that tends to break or crumble
if the dry cleaner is careless and hits them with the press. These
buttons are common on designer dress shirts (ie Zegna), but are a bit
thicker than most shirts.

Unfortunately I used some careless dry cleaners who were not able to
find a close approximation for the buttons. I am looking for a source
to buy replacements. I don't expect to find an exact replacement, but
I'd like to get something close and then replace all the buttons with
the new matching set. Since so many designer dress shirts use these
style of buttons, I thought they'd be easy to find. But I am stuck.
Can any of you help me?

Here's a geometric description:
4 holes
There are two sizes of buttons required.
The small buttons at the collar and the middle button for the cuffs
are about 5/16" in diameter.
The other buttons are about 3/8" in diameter
Both have a thickeness of about 1/8".
The button tops are not flat. They are slightly concave with the 4
holes at the low region of the dome.
And there is a small chamfer around the top edge.

The colours I am looking for are white, a yellowish brown, and a royal
blue. I would like to buy sets of each type.

Can any of you point me to a source where I can buy these types of buttons?

To Clarify. I would like to buy these replacement buttons in the
United States or Canada.

Have you tried contacting the shirt's manufacturer? Generally a good
clothing manufacturer will provide replacement button.

But given that the original buttons will continue to break, why not
sew new, good quality, buttons on the shirt? Melamine buttons are
supposed to be tough.

A quality tailor should be able to help. Not your typical type found
in a mall or cleaner, but one who has been in the biz for thirty
years. Find an old, grungy, cluttered tailor shop and (s)he'll have
quality buttons coming out of his or her ears.
