I a UK citizen and have bought a 2nd home in Georgia USA. I will be
staying there twice in a year using US visa waiver for 90 days for
each stay (total 6 mths). I want to buy a car to use during my stays
but I am having trouble locating a US auto insurer who can offer any
cover as they require you to have a US driving licence. I cannot get a
US driving licence as a US SSN is needed which I cannot get due to my
visa waiver/tourist status.
I can rent a car no problem and drive on my UK licence so it must be
possible that some companies do.

I have called and verified with GMAC, Progressive, and OrionAuto that
they do, indeed offer such insurance. OrionAuto claims that they asses
no extra surcharge because of foreign license, so I feel they are
likely to have the least expensive rates. Progressive will allow you
to apply and bind insurance all through the internet (including a
policy with a foreign licence) allowing the easiest (but perhaps not
the least expensive) option. Progressive does have a foreign license
surcharge.

Unfortunately, for GMAC and OrionAuto you can not get a quote from
contacting the 1 800 number. In order to obtain a quote, you need to
contact a local insurance agency in Georgia that represents the above
companies. I have obtained local contacts for each of the above
insurance companies. Most are in Atlanta. If you canprovide me with
the general region where you will be in Georgia, I can provide you
with your closest local contact for each company. Progressive can give
quotes from the 800 number, although I do not know if you can dial a
US 800 number, As mentioned before, you can complete the who process
with progressive online.

When you do call or apply online, you will need to provide your date
of birth, your UK license number/identifier, the address of your home
in Georgia, the make/model/year of the car, if the car will be used
for work or recreation. If for work, the commuting location, the
length of commute and the number of times per week that the vehicle
will be used.

Try this ? You can get a US Tax # - You get this from the Social
Security office ? with a letter from the SSO stating that you are not
eligible for an SS#. With the other documentation showing you are in
the Country legally, this will get you a US drivers license in the
State of Louisiana. As for Florida I don?t know but it?s surely worth
checking out.
